Known for its budget-friendly bed-in-a-box mattress, Allswell brings that same dedication to combining quality with affordability in its Allswell 4-Inch Memory Foam Mattress Topper. This mattress topper features dual-layer construction designed to provide both comfort and support. It’s infused with Copper Gel and features an open cell foam upper to maximize airflow and help keep you cool.

A great mattress topper can get extra life out of an old mattress, or it can soften up a mattress that’s a little bit too firm. Allswell’s affordable price point makes it a practical choice for many, and the topper can accommodate side, stomach, and back sleepers. It’s an easy way to customize the way your mattress sleeps so that it’s better suited to your preferences.

I spent four weeks sleeping on this mattress topper. I also tested its motion transfer and support properties, and was pleased with its performance. If you’re looking for an affordable yet effective topper, this mattress topper might be the right choice – especially if you don't have budget for the best mattress right now.

Who will the Allswell 4” Memory Foam Mattress Topper suit?

  • Sleepers who like a softer feel: While this topper is categorized as firm, it actually creates a soft feel that’s ideal if you like a soft or medium-firmness mattress.
  • Sleepers who don’t want to wake when their partner moves: The memory foam does a great job of preventing motion transfer, perfect if you sleep with a partner or pets who tend to move around a lot.
  • Those who sleep hot: The cooling foam does a good job of preventing heat build-up, ideal for hot summers.
  • Those looking for an affordable way to extend their mattress life: This topper can help you to get extra life out of an old mattress, adding cushion and comfort.
  • Side, back, and stomach sleepers: As long as you don’t mind sinking into a softer surface, this topper will work with any sleeping position.

Delivery and set up

The Allswell 4-Inch Memory Foam Mattress Topper Infused with Copper Gel arrived in an Allswell box that was packed inside a standard cardboard shipping box. Both boxes arrived in good condition

The Allswell box is equipped with handles, but I didn’t initially discover them because they’re along the box’s longest sides, rather than on the ends like where you would normally find them. The topper was tightly wrapped in plastic and was easy to remove from the box, though this queen-size topper was surprisingly heavy at 19 pounds.

Within the box, I found a “welcome” card including instructions for unwrapping the topper. The manufacturer recommends that you unroll the topper on a flat surface and give it 48 hours to recover in a well-ventilated room.

Unwrapping the topper was easy. I used a pair of scissors and carefully cut through the plastic. The ends of the topper were not wrapped, so it was easy enough to slip the end of the scissors beneath the plastic.

The debris in question

While I appreciated the fact that the unwrapped ends made it easy to unpack the topper, that design also allowed some sort of debris to work its way down into the plastic. You see, the mattress was folded in half, then folded in half again and rolled up - the spotty flecks were along those edges that were exposed while in the box, so they were scattered along the surface, toward the middle and toward one edge. This black debris was minimal, but it did stain the topper in areas. Soap and water did little to remove it.

Once unwrapped, I could tell immediately why the manufacturer recommended placing the topper in a well-ventilated room. While I have purchased multiple mattresses and toppers that shipped compressed and wrapped in plastic, this topper has the strongest off-gassing odor that I have experienced. Even after 48 hours the odor remained and didn’t fully dissipate until about 72 hours after unwrapping. I could not have slept in the room with the topper, and I would recommend giving the topper an extra day or two to air out before using it.

After being unfurled, the topper was pinched in certain places and did not immediately lay flat. It eventually flatted out after about two hours.

When I unwrapped the topper, it appeared to have been pinched and compressed into a swell while in the plastic. After about five hours, though, the topper had recovered and any sign of that imperfection was gone. Once recovered, the queen topper was a perfect fit for my queen bed.

What is the Allswell 4” Memory Foam Mattress Topper like to sleep on?

This mattress topper features a two-layer construction designed to give both comfort and support. The bottom layer is made of memory foam, and the top layer of Coolflow Foam is an open cell memory foam designed to allow for plenty of airflow while also wicking moisture. The topper is also infused with a copper gel, while graphite helps to transfer heat away from the body.

I found that the result is a very soft topper, even though it is marketed as being firm. The upper layer compresses easily, allowing you to sink down into it. However, I was impressed to see that the bottom layer does provide a sense of support. That bottom layer doesn’t compress, even under my full body weight, avoiding the “bottoming out” feeling that I have experienced with other memory foam toppers.

This results in a feeling of being almost stuck in the topper. Once positioned, it’s difficult to shift around, and it feels like I have sunk down into the topper. When laying close to the edge of the bed, my weight causes the edges of the topper to pull up, enhancing that feeling of sinking and being surrounded by the topper, more than lying on top of it. Note: Allswell also offers thinner versions that should sink less.

This isn’t all negative, however. The topper offers excellent comfort. I found that it effectively prevented pressure points, and I naturally relaxed to the surface. I suffer from back pain and, while the topper didn’t reduce the pain I feel at night, it also didn’t aggravate it. I did notice that I didn’t feel pressure in my knees, ankles, or heels like I sometimes experience when sleeping on a firmer surface. It could be a good solution for those investigating the best mattresses for back pain.

Because I sank so deeply into the topper, I assumed that I would be too hot, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was comfortable all night long. During my time testing this topper, temperatures climbed to 85 degrees Fahrenheit indoors. I never felt that the topper was making me hot, or that it slept any hotter than my usual mattress. I wouldn’t say that it made me significantly cooler, but it did sleep much cooler than expected.

This topper excels when it comes to preventing motion transfer. I am joined in bed by several rambunctious cats during the night, but I couldn’t even feel them get onto the bed. While I often wake up when a cat moves, bathes, or just walks around the bed, that did not happen while testing the topper. Of all the topper’s features, I’m most impressed by its capability to prevent motion transfer.

I also tested the motion transfer using a glass of water. The first challenge was getting the glass to sit securely on the topper; it repeatedly sank and tipped. Once positioned, I found that I had to be 12 inches or closer to the glass when pushing or rolling on the topper to vibrate the water within the glass. Thanks to this excellent motion transfer prevention, I believe this topper is well-suited for partners or anyone who has pets or kids who join them in bed.

The water never spilled - it was rather bizarre. No matter where I placed the glass on the mattress, it tilted significantly, but stopped and held itself in the position in the photo. I wasn't sure what to make of it.

Because the topper is generously sized at four inches high, it adds significant height to my bed. If I had a mattress of a standard height, that wouldn’t be an issue, but I placed this topper on a Dreamcloud mattress that already measures 14 inches high. Even though I have deep-fitted sheets, they no longer fit both the topper and the mattress, and the bed’s height makes it difficult to get into and out of.

That is exacerbated by the lack of edge support. While the bottom layer of the topper does offer some support, the top layer compresses almost completely, so the edge feels soft and rounded. This design could be problematic for sleepers who depend on the firm bed edge to get into and out of bed safely.

The Allswell topper features a dual-layer memory foam design. The top two inches are designed for comfort, while the bottom two inches provide support. The Coolflow foam upper layer wicks moisture and maximizes airflow to keep you cool. The topper is also infused with copper gel for its antimicrobial and cooling properties.

The topper can be spot cleaned with mild detergent and warm water.

Ordering, trial and warranty

The topper is available directly from Allswell, as well as Walmart, its parent company. If you buy through the Allswell website, ground shipping is free.

Allswell accepts topper returns within 30 nights of delivery. The topper must be in its original condition, packaging, and tags. The company does not offer a warranty on its mattress toppers.

How does the Allswell 4-Inch Memory Foam Mattress Topper Infused with Copper Gel rate online?

This mattress topper has a 4.3 out of 5-star rating on the Allswell site, based on 694 reviews. It also has a 4.2 out of 5-star rating on Walmart.com (opens in new tab), based on 807 reviews.

Many reviewers mention receiving damaged toppers, or toppers that quickly started to leave behind crumbs. Reviews also state that the toppers are incorrectly sized for their beds and that the toppers are often many inches too short. I did not personally experience any of these issues.

How does the Allswell 4-Inch Memory Foam Mattress Topper compare to other Allswell mattress toppers?

In addition to this 4-inch topper, Allswell makes a 3-inch version (opens in new tab) that’s infused with graphite, as opposed to copper. Both toppers are designed to provide support while keeping you cool; however the copper offers additional antimicrobial properties not found in graphite models.

Allswell also recently introduced a two-inch topper (opens in new tab) created with both graphite and copper and uses what Allswell termed Energex Memory Foam Mattress, which promises enhanced pressure relief.

Unlike the 4-inch topper, the 2-inch and 3-inch models feature only one layer of foam.

The 2-inch and 3-inch toppers are more economically priced, starting at $68 and 79 respectively, so it might be a good way to see if a memory foam topper is right for you. These thinner toppers should provide plenty of comfort, but they won’t add as much height to your bed as you’ll find with the 4-inch topper.

Real Homes verdict: is the Allswell 4” Memory Foam Mattress Topper worth it?

Between its relatively low price point and multi-layer construction, this mattress topper is well worth buying. It does an impressive job at preventing motion transfer, and it adds significant softness to a bed. The topper performed consistently during the one-month testing period, and though there were minor inconveniences like its powerful off-gassing smell, it offers great value for the price, like its full-sized counterpart, the original Allswell mattress.

This mattress topper is well-suited to a sleeper who prefers a softer surface than their current mattress offers. It could be ideal for someone who is working with an older mattress or a mattress that just doesn’t meet their preferences. Thanks to its ability to prevent motion transfer, it’s well-suited to couples and anyone who might share their bed with kids or pets. It would also be a fantastic way to add comfort to a dorm mattress.

Because this topper is so soft and creates a sinking sensation, it’s not ideal for anyone who prefers a firmer mattress. If you have difficulty shifting on a softer mattress, this topper could make it challenging to move around at night. Its soft edges with a lack of support also mean it’s not a great choice if you depend on the edge of your mattress to support you as you get into and out of bed.

What does Graphite do in a memory foam mattress?

Graphite infused memory foam mattresses are a new breed that combine the benefits of memory foam and graphite to create the ultimate sleep experience. The combination provides a super breathable heat-removing surface to disperse heat out and away keeping you cool throughout the night.

Why are mattress toppers infused with graphite?

The topper is also infused with graphite, designed to help regulate temperature by pulling heat away from the surface.

What does graphite and copper do in mattress topper?

The graphite and copper combine forces to keep you cool, while the copper serves to make your mattress more resistant to mold, mildew and other bacteria trying to creep into your sleep space. On the firmness scale, this one also ranks as firm so, again, the graphite topper is the softest of the three.

Is Allswell mattress topper good for back pain?

The bottom layer is Coolflow foam to help you sleep cool all night long, and the top layer is copper-infused, which can help reduce back pain.
