For instance 1/2 means the same as 1 divided by 2 which equals 0.5. Or 3/5 is 3 divided by 5 which equals 0.6. That's all you need to know to convert the following worksheets on fractions to
decimals! Converting fractions to decimals is a common concept that is often taught in the fifth and sixth grades in most educational jurisdictions. Students should have plenty of exposure to concrete manipulatives prior to complete pencil paper tasks. For instance, work with fraction bars and circles to ensure a

Converting Fractions to Decimals
To convert a fraction to a decimal, you need to understand that the fraction sign — and the division sign ÷ are actually the same!
So in other words: \[ {a \over b} \; = \; a ÷ b \]
If you use a calculator, it is quite easy to convert a fraction into a decimal. If you do not have a calculator, you can still convert a fraction into a decimal using long (or short) division.
How to convert a fraction to a decimal
- Take the numerator of the fraction and divide it by the denominator.
- Your calculator will now display the fraction as a decimal.
Examples
Example 1) Change into a decimal the fraction: \[ {3 \over 8} \]
We calculate 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375
So we have: \[ { 3 \over 8 } \; = \; 0.375 \]
Example 2) Convert into a decimal the fraction \[ {9 \over 20} \]
We calculate 9 ÷ 20 = 0.45
This gives us: \[ { 9 \over 20 } \; = \; 0.45 \]
Example 3) Convert into a decimal the fraction \[ 4 {1 \over 5} \]
We calculate 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2
This gives us: \[ 4 { 1 \over 5 } \; = \; 4 + 0.2 \; = \; 4.2 \]
Example 4) Convert into a decimal the fraction \[ {13 \over 4} \]
We calculate 13 ÷ 4 = 3.25
This gives us: \[ { 13 \over 4 } \; = \; 3.25 \]
