B&M transmission cooler install. Direction of flow matter?

I put a B&M 70264 cooler in a few days ago and I was wondering if it matters where you hook your incoming oil and your return line on the cooler? Should cool the same in either direction no?

I have wondered the same thing and couldn't find anything. I have put two different ones on my car and just ran them like the stock cooler with the out line going to the bottom of the cooler and the top going back into the transmission. Don't know if it's right or wrong or does not matter tho

I don't see where it would make any difference. I would suggest that if you're mounting it in a standing position, line in should be on top to have gravity working with it to ease strain on pump.

That would make sense. The factory line out of the transmission actually goes to the bottom to the top and out though doesn't it?

Yes, with the stock cooler the transmission out goes to the bottom of the factory radiator cooler then up to the top (return) were it goes to the in on the transmission.

I bypassed the stock radiator cooler but mounted my aftermarket cooler with the bottom fitting being the transmission out pushing fluid up the cooler, and the top fitting being the transmission in. Just like the stock cooler is routed.

I think I figured it out though. The bottom line on our cars is the out line or the "hot fluid" and the top is the inlet back. I found in b&m's instructions that they recommend you hook up the hot side to the upper left. So I have mine hooked up correctly.

I did mine the same way as this one except I bypassed the stock cooler....

So if the cooler in that picture is turned 90 degrees and the fittings are parallel/on top of each other, in the instructions they say to run the transmission out to the top cooler fitting which in turn would push the fluid down the cooler, than the bottom fitting would go to the IN on the transmission, correct?

I'm starting to think it really doesn't matter. All I did was hold mine up like it was pictured and made that my inlet. Only because I didn't mount mine up and down. I mounted mine "dope style".

Here is a pic of mine. The hose you see in the picture is the "hot fluid" and I used that port on the cooler as the inlet.

Doesnt matter as far as the cooler itself is concerned, it flows the same either direction.

Did you bypass the stock cooler or run in series? Would you recommend running the 70264 in series or by itself?

I started in series then changed it to independent. In my opinion it runs cooler without running through the radiator.

Are transmission cooler lines directional?

The cooler can have fluid flow in either direction through it.

Is there a wrong way to install a transmission cooler?

Expert Reply: The Derale stacked plate transmission coolers like part # D13403 can be mounted in any orientation that you need including having the hose fittings down. The line pressure from the transmission will push all of the fluid through the cooler regardless of how it is mounted.

Which line is the return line on a 4l60e transmission?

Once the hot fluid flows into an through the factory cooler, it then exits at the top or other side to the cooler outlet or return line, which is the top line on your 4l60e. This would be the line you'd tap into if you were looking to install an aftermarket external transmission cooler.

Which line is the return line on a th350 transmission?

Expert Reply: On a GM Turbo 350 transmission the bottom line is the return line and the one to install a transmission cooler on. The top one is the send line.
