If you're already running +3 it takes +3, if you have +4 it uses +4. There's no set quanitity--it varies by how long you had it open and what you took off. 4-7 is the usual range. At this point I might take the time to drain out most of the rest of the fluid and convert to +4, seeing as how +3's life is waning.

With the use of aft+3 diminishing (?) I do not see an increase in availability of aftermarket atf+4 in the stores. In fact I have only seen it once and I cannot remember where.

I just did the trans. fluid with atf+3 about 6000 miles ago and I just went to the store and couldn't find atf+3 so I used atf+4 to fill it back up. Autozone told me 4 qts. and that is what I put in. Now if I start it and it ends up being 2 qts. low will that damage anything letting it warm up and checking it? I don't plan on driving it untill I know I
have the correct amout in it, I just don't want to start it and hurt something if it ends up 2 qts. low.

You will be fine. I let mine drain overnight once and it only took 5 qts. Once it is warm/hot, move the shifter into each gear and pause for a couple seconds in (1st, 2nd, drive, etc) positions, and then finally leaving it in the neutral position. With the engine still running, check the tranny level. If you are switching over to a
different type of fluid (like +3 to +4) then I would repeat the process on the following weekend, to actually replace most of the fluid by dilution.

Right after you change the fluid, don't waste time letting it warm up. Run it through the gears and check it _pronto_. Just get it close to where it should be, worry about the final level later. I let mine run in N for about five minutes after doing a change. It was low a quart or two and was making a whining noise when I got back. The metal that put in
the pan killed my governor electronics. Probably didn't help the longevitity of the tranny either.

Without special equipment it is possible to replace only ATF in the AT pan because of the way automatic transmission in 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been designed. It will take about 30–90 minutes depends on your skill level and might save you up to $200 depends on the region you live in.
With a spanner or a retched with the right size head unscrew the refill plug and the drain plug. After that drain old AT fluid. If you want to replace the filter you need to remove the ATF pan, replace the filter and then install the ATF pan back with a new gasket. Screw back the drain plug with a new gasket and refill the transmission with new ATF.
Please be noted that all capacities listed here are approximate. Check fluid levels when adding or refilling as recommended in your 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee user's manual. Keep in mind that all information here is provided “as is” without any warranty of any kind.
