Maximum Towing Capacity - 1100 lb
It is the same for all trims.
The maximum weight that Honda Civic is allowed to tow. The maximum trailer weights listed are only applicable for altitudes up to 3280 ft (1,000 m) above sea level. With increasing altitude the engine power and therefore the car's climbing ability are impaired because of the reduced air density, so the maximum trailer weight has to be reduced accordingly. The weight of the car and trailer must be reduced by 10% for every further 3280 ft (1,000 m) (or part thereof).
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) - no data
This is the maximum amount of weight Honda Civic is rated to carry (engine, chassis, fluids, passengers, cargo, load - everything). It is often determined by the manufacturer and is indicated in the owner's manual or on the inside of the drive's door panel.
Curb Weight - 2877 lb
This is how much Honda Civic weighs sitting on the curb with no driver, passengers, no cargo and no load with all standard options.
Payload Capacity - no data
Payload is considered all the extra stuff you put inside your vehicle, whether it be passengers or a pile of rocks, that weight is all considered payload. You can increase it by:
- Upgrading the Rear Springs.
- Adding Coil-Over Shock Absorbers.
- Installing a Longer Truck Bed.
- Attaching a Trailer.
- Adding Bed Racks.
Front Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) - no data
It is the maximum allowable weight that can be placed on a front axle of your Honda Civic.
Rear Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) - no data
It is the maximum allowable weight that can be placed on a rear axle of your Honda Civic.

I have a 2016 Honda Civic and I'm thinking about installing a hitch so I can tow one of those 4x8 uhaul trailers for when I move from Denver to Austin. I believe the max load for my car is 1000lbs but with me (150lbs), the trailer (850 lbs) and my stuff (400lbs) I'm looking at a total weight of 1400lbs.
How bad of an idea is this? The drive is pretty flat and open. I'd stay at about 50mph. My one friend who works on cars says it should be fine, but a quick google search has me worried.
I know that this isn't what my car was designed to do. And I know it's over the limit of what the manufacturer recommends. But am I really going to have any problems?
In this blog post, we will answer the following question: How much weight can a Honda Civic tow? We will discuss the towing capacity and engine performance of the Honda Civic.
A Honda Civic can tow from 0 lbs up to 3,300 lbs depending on the car’s year of manufacture and whether the towed vehicle is equipped with brakes or not. For more details, see below.

How to determine how much weight your Honda Civic can tow
These are the steps to determine the appropriate load capacity limit:
- Locate the statement “The total weight of occupants and cargo must never exceed XXX kg (XXX lbs)” on the vehicle label.
- Determine the combined weight of the driver and passengers who will occupy the vehicle.
- Subtract the combined weight of the driver and passengers from XXX kg (XXX lbs).
- The figure reached represents the load capacity available for baggage. For example, if the number “XXX” is equal to 635 kg (1,400 lb) and five occupants of 68 kg (150 lb) will be seated in the vehicle, the load capacity that remains for the luggage is 295 kg ( 650 lb). 635 – 340 (5 x 68) = 295 kg (1,400 – 750 (5 x 150) = 650 lb)
- Determine the combined weight of luggage and load in the vehicle. The weight cannot exceed the available load capacity calculated in step 4.
- If the vehicle is towing a trailer, the load of the trailer will be transferred to the vehicle.
In addition, the total weight of the vehicle, all passengers, accessories, luggage and trailer tongue load must not exceed the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. on the axle (PNBE). Both are labelled on the driver’s door pillar
Tips for towing with a Honda Civic
With the arrival of good weather, many motorists will plan trips with a trailer: renting a caravan for the holidays, moving, boat, mountain bike, etc. Before embarking on such an adventure, it is essential to ensure the traction capacity of your vehicle, otherwise, it could cause serious damage.
First, check your owner’s manual to find out the load capacity of your vehicle. A sticker on the driver’s door indicates this, otherwise, ask a dealer or a trailer hitch specialist. You should also consider the weight of passengers, luggage, bicycles, etc.
The latest generation of pickup trucks and SUVs have a towing function that calibrates several components, such as the suspension, and it is possible to add a transmission cooler. The caravan or trailer must be fitted with a braking system if its weight is greater than 2,860 lbs or more than half the weight of the towing vehicle. Finally, it is essential that the tires are in good condition: spring is a festival of broken trailers and expensive road trips!
It is essential to respect the towing capacity of the vehicle hitch: total weight and tongue load. Equally important is the proper functioning of the lights. A rental agency or specialist will provide you with information or inspect it.
Before hitting the road, do a test drive in a parking lot, as cornering, braking, accelerating and reversing are all done quite differently. On the road, keep a greater distance from the vehicle in front and reduce cruising speed. Parking in a campsite can become… nightmarish! Remember that blind spots are greater and the use of turn signals is no longer an option.
Typically, front-wheel drive vehicles have less power than rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicles.
Towing with a Honda Civic is easier than expected. The good behaviour on the road when towing is helped by the two-way adjustable suspension, which despite the power of absorption of everything that means pit, tram line or irregularity on the road, takes care to keep the roll at a distance by a slightly uncomfortable rigidity at first, but good as long as the limits of the car are not exceeded.
When towing with a Civic, the steering could provide some more feedback, but it contributes, along with those mentioned above, to a pleasant driving experience, depriving the driver of fatigue even after several hours spent behind the wheel. That is exactly what you need when you decide to go on a trip with your family, on vacation.
Conclusions
Overall, the Honda Civic Tourer is an extremely competent and easy-to-notice variant (both literally and figuratively) to meet the family needs of customers, no better than other competitors on the market.
It is one of the cars with the most attractive and innovative design in recent times. But it is that, in addition, it can include an extensive list of extras to customize it to the maximum.
Front or side skirts, rear diffusers or trims on the mirrors for the exterior, details on the dashboard, sports pedals, protectors for the cargo area and endless alternatives to create an absolutely unique car.
