15 gallons is about 125 pounds of juice (taking into account density).

The most efficient presses yield about 75 pounds of juice for every 100 pounds of apples (75% yield). A regular basket press is not as good, maybe only 60-65%.

So if you want 15 gallons you will need at least 165-170 lb of fruit. More realistically, given a mill and press that is not ideal...you will need about 210-225 lb of fruit to get 15 gallons.

If you end up short, one thing you can do is add a little water to your pomace and re-press it. This will dilute your juice a little, but you can compensate to some degree by adding sugar and malic acid to the appropriate concentrations.

A 5 gallon bucket holds 40lb of water. Since apples don't pack as tightly as water (and the density is similar) expect to hold about 20lb of apples in a 5 gallon bucket, maybe a little more if they are tiny crabapples.

It should be if you have good press efficiency:

1 bushel ~ 42 pounds ~ 125 medium-small apples

1 bushel yields about 2.5-3.5 gallons of juice depending on a variety of factors

You have a little less than half (0.40) a bushel by weight so using the lower 2.5 gallons per bushel you'll end up with about a gallon.

Improvised home setups can have worse efficiency and end up closer to 1.5-2 gallons per bushel.

Convert from US gallons or UK gallons to pounds for a variety of different liquids, such as water, milk, gasoline and oil.

How much does a gallon weigh?

A US gallon of water at room temperature (70°F or 21°C) weighs around 8.33lb. A gallon of milk weighs around 8.64lb. and a gallon of gasoline weighs around 6.2 lb. 1 2

How many pounds are in a gallon?

The weight of a gallon of liquids such as milk, gasoline, liquid propane or beer is dependent upon the density of the liquid. And the density of a liquid will often depend upon the temperature at which it is being stored. To give a simple explanation, a gallon of water at room temperature will weigh less than a gallon of honey (because honey is a denser substance).

When making a conversion, it's important to remember that the US gallon is smaller than the imperial (UK) gallon. In the US, a gallon is equivalent to 128 fluid ounces. But, in the UK an imperial gallon is bigger at 160 fluid ounces.

How much does a gallon of gasoline weigh?

A US gallon of gasoline weighs around 6.2 pounds. This is based upon a gasoline density of 0.74 kg/l. The density of gasoline can vary between 0.7–0.8 kg/l depending on the level of aromatics.

How much does a gallon of diesel weigh?

A US gallon of petroleum diesel weighs about 7.1 pounds. This is based upon a density of 0.85 kg/l. The density of diesel is about 15-20% higher than that of standard gasoline because it contains larger hydrocarbon molecules, making diesel heavier than gasoline. 2

How much does a gallon of milk weigh?

A US gallon of milk weighs approximately 8.637 pounds, a quart weighs 2.16 pounds and a pint weighs 1.08 pounds. These weights are based upon a standard milk density of 1.035 kg/l. 3

Let's look at some more gallon to pounds conversions.

Weighing gallons of water

The precise weight of water varies according to its density, which in turn depends on its storage temperature.

Notes on liquid densities

It's important to note that the density (mass per unit volume) of a liquid can vary depending upon many factors. These include the ingredients within the liquid, the processing method and how it is subsequently stored. Note that we also have a converter for liters and tons here.

How many pounds is a gallon of apple cider?

17 lb is pretty damn close to 1 gallon, with a good press. I've seen sources say anywhere between 13 to 20lbs.

How many apples make a gallon of cider?

You need a good amount of apples to make cider. Approximately 30 to 40 apples will yield one gallon of cider. The apples need to be as ripe as possible. It's fine to use less-than-perfect apples on the ground at any orchard or old apple farm.

How long does a gallon of apple cider last?

Sweet cider keeps its fresh-off-the-shelf taste for about two weeks if it's refrigerated. After two weeks, it begins to become carbonated as fermentation turns it into alcohol. Certain alcohols, like hard cider, don't really go bad, but the taste can change after a year or two when they begin to turn into vinegar.
