AppleCare+ provides extra insurance protection for Apple devices

The cost of AppleCare+ extra warranty coverage for the Apple Silicon MacBook Pro and MacBook Air has been reduced, while other models remain unchanged.

Apple has cut $50, or around a fifth, off the price of AppleCare+ for the M1 version of the MacBook Air. At the same time, the M1 MacBook Pro has seen the cost of its coverage reduced by $20.

The new price applies to anyone buying AppleCare+ alongside a new Mac. AppleCare+ can now also be bought during a certain period after purchase, subject in certain situations to a visual inspection of the device at an Apple Store.

Officially, that certain period is 60 days from the date the device was bought. However, Apple has at times extended this, due to the coronavirus. According to MacRumors, Apple is allowing recent buyers to cancel their existing AppleCare+ contract and buy at the new rate.

Prices for all other Macs, including the Intel version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro, are unaffected. This means that, for the time being at least, coverage of these specific Apple Silicon Macs is less expensive than that of Intel Macs.

AppleCare+ continues to offer the same insurance protection for Apple devices that it did. That means up to two incidents of accidental damage per year, subject to a service charge that starts at $99 per incident.

Apple just revised the AppleCare+ prices for the M1-powered MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

For the M1-powered MacBook Air, consumers can purchase the AppleCare+ plan for S$279. Previously, it was priced at S$348 and this translates to savings of S$69.

For the M1-powered MacBook Pro (13-inch), the price drop is significantly lesser; the AppleCare+ plan is priced at S$349, down from S$378.

The AppleCare+ for Mac extends warranty coverage to three years from the purchase date and includes up to two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months. There is a service fee of S$138 for screen damage or external chassis damage, or S$428 for other damages. In addition, there is 24/7 priority access to Apple Support via chat or phone.

Apple has adjusted the pricing of AppleCare+ plans for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro users, with a notable distinction between Intel and M1-powered machines for the first time. Starting today in the United States and select other countries, AppleCare+ is now cheaper for the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro than for the Intel MacBook Pro.

As first spotted by MacRumors, AppleCare+ for the MacBook Air is now $50 cheaper than before, with Apple lowering the price from $249 to $199. This change applies to both Intel and M1-powered MacBook Air models.

Meanwhile, things are more interesting for the MacBook Pro. Apple has now split the 13-inch MacBook Pro into two separate listings. AppleCare+ for the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro is now available for $249, down from the previous pricing of $269. AppleCare+ for the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Intel remains priced at $269.

For those unfamiliar, here’s what you get with AppleCare+ for Mac:

AppleCare+ for Mac extends your coverage to three years from your AppleCare+ purchase date and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months, each subject to a service fee of $99 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or $299 for other damage, plus applicable tax. In addition, you’ll get 24/7 priority access to Apple experts via chat or phone.

It’s notable to see Apple making AppleCare+ slightly cheaper, and it will be interesting to see if this trend continues as more Macs are transitioned to Apple Silicon. Apple outlines multiple ways to buy AppleCare+ for your Mac within 60 days of your Mac purchase:

  • On your device (go to  > About This Mac > Service)
  • Online (requires you to verify your serial number)
  • At an Apple Store (if AppleCare+ is purchased separately from Mac, inspection of Mac and proof of purchase are required)
  • By contacting Apple
