Now that travel is starting to get back to normal, it’s time to hit the skies and fly to your next dream destination. As you’re browsing through ticket options, you might see some choices from Allegiant Air that are far cheaper than other airlines like Delta or United. What’s that about?

Allegiant Air is a no-frills airline that offers generally lower fares than other major carriers. As a discount airline, Allegiant has to make up for the lost revenue in ticket prices by charging for other amenities that bigger airlines typically offer at no extra charge. This includes things like seat selection, WiFi, in-flight audio and video entertainment, and, of course, baggage fees.

So what exactly is Allegiant’s carry-on policy?

Allegiant carry-on policy

Unlike some of the major airlines like United or American, Allegiant does not allow passengers to bring a carry-on bag on the plane free of charge. According to the company’s baggage policy, passengers are only allowed one personal item, which must be stored under the seat in front of them.

Just like with Spirit Airlines, if you want to bring a carry-on, you’ll have to pay for it, with prices ranging from $10 to $75 depending on the size, weight, your ticket, and the flight you’re on. Note that you are limited to just one carry-on bag even if you do pay for it, but this is standard among most airlines.

Even if you’ve opted for a carry-on, you might be required to check it at the gate in the following circumstances:

  • The overhead bin is full
  • You’ve brought a car seat or a stroller along
  • Your bag does not fit in the overhead bin

If you’re forced to gate-check your bag because it’s oversized, you’ll have to pay a fee of up to $75.00 for the hassle, so it’s important to know how big your carry-on bag can be! These fees do not apply to strollers, assistive devices, or mobility aids.

Allegiant carry-on size

Allegiant’s baggage policy clearly lays out exactly how big your carry-on can be, and it’s right at the industry standard of 22” x 14” x 9” (55.9cm x 35.6cm x 22.9cm). The actual type of carry-on that you can bring is not specified by Allegiant, though the policy does mention roll-aboard bags and garment bags as examples.

In short, as long as your carry-on fits within the overhead bin and you’ve paid the baggage fee, you’re good to go. A few different kinds of carry-on bags that meet Allegiant’s size requirements are:

Allegiant personal item size

Even though you can’t get a free carry-on with an Allegiant ticket, all passengers are granted one personal item free of charge. Many airlines don’t specify the size of your personal item, only that it fits underneath the seat in front of you. Allegiant, however, does have a personal item size limit — 7” x 15” x 16” (17.8cm x 38.1cm x 40.6cm).

Even though there’s a size limit, you still shouldn’t have a problem bringing along small backpacks, purses, briefcases, laptop bags, or anything else similar. Some good examples of personal items when you’re flying Allegiant are:

Allegiant carry-on weight limit

If you’re worried about your carry-on is too heavy to fly Allegiant, don’t think about it too much. The airline does not specify the weight limit for carry-ons, but typically, checked bags max out at 39.9 pounds. Anything heavier than that is considered overweight (up to 100 pounds), and you’ll have to pay additional fees based on this fee table.

So while there’s no stated weight limit for your carry-on, I’d suggest staying under 40 pounds (definitely under 100 pounds!) to be sure you won’t face extra charges. Plus, who wants to lift a 100-pound bag into the overhead compartment in front of a plane full of people?

Allegiant carry-on liquids

Like most other airlines based here in the US, Allegiant follows TSA guidelines when it comes to carrying liquids in your carry-on bag. This policy is known as the 3-1-1 rule, and it requires:

  • All containers must be 3.4oz or less
  • All containers must fit inside one quart-sized resealable bag
  • Passengers are limited to one bag with liquids

Sure, you could just go into your pantry and grab any old quart-sized Ziploc bag and be done with it, but you can do better than that! A few more specialized options include:

When did Allegiant start charging for carry

Move over Spirit Airlines - there's another low-cost carrier about to make serious money off passengers' carry-on baggage. Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air confirmed to ABCNews.com it will begin charging as much as $35 for carry-on bags for reservations made starting April 4.
