When your Samsung washer doesn’t drain, it can be alarming to find your clothes sitting in water in the wash tub. What causes draining problems? It could be because the washer isn’t level or the drain tube is clogged or pinched. Adjust the legs of your washer, as needed, and check the drain tube for kinks or damage. Troubleshoot a Samsung washer not draining with these likely causes and straightforward solutions.

3 Common Reasons for a Samsung Washer Not Draining

While puddles of lingering water can induce panic, there are often simple solutions for a Samsung washer not draining. We’ll detail the most common causes and DIY solutions before determining if a professional repair is needed. But first, here’s how to drain the water from your washer, if needed.

How to Drain Water Manually

It may be necessary to first drain any remaining water to avoid a mess during your Samsung washing machine troubleshooting. However, opening the washer door and attempting to mop up the water can still result in a messy cleanup.

Here’s how to drain water from Samsung washing machine manually before troubleshooting:

  1. Unplug the washing machine.
  2. Open the filter cover in the bottom right corner of the machine.
  3. Place a shallow bowl atop a towel under the filter cap.
  4. Unscrew the cap by turning it to the left and slowly pulling it out about 6 inches.
  5. Let the water flow into the bowl.
  6. Push the filter cap back in and tighten by turning it to the right.
  7. Replace the filter cover and restore power to the washer.

Washing Machine Isn’t Level

What’s one of the most common causes for a Samsung washer not draining? A machine that’s not level will cause draining problems and can also be responsible when your washer won’t spin properly. If a leveling tool reveals that your machine isn’t level, first check the floor underneath the washer. Carpeting or a slippery surface can make the floor uneven or cause rocking.

If the floor is level and the machine can still rock back and forth, check the washer’s leveling feet to make sure they’re even. Rotate the leveling feet counterclockwise to lower them and clockwise to raise them until they’re even.

Drain Hose is Clogged or Pinched

Clogs, kinks and improper drain hose installation can also cause draining problems, as they prevent water from flowing through the hose.

Follow these steps to assess the drain hose:

  1. Inspect the hose for kinks or damage. While some kinks can be gently straightened, a damaged hose requires replacement.
  2. Check your user manual to determine how to disconnect the hose and assess for clogs. Remove any visible blockages before reconnecting.
  3. Make sure the hose is properly installed. The hose should descend 6-8 inches down the standpipe or sink without forming an airtight connection. It should also be 18-96 inches in height.

Clean Washer Drain Pump Filter

If your front load Samsung washer won’t drain, the drain pump filter may be clogged. In front-loading machines, this filter prevents small articles of clothing and debris from damaging the drain pump. However, if it gets clogged, the washer may not drain properly. Cleaning the filter on a monthly basis can help prevent blockages.

Here’s how to clean the drain pump filter when you find your front load Samsung washer not draining properly:

  1. Open the pump filter access panel by pressing on the cover.
  2. Position a towel and bowl under the drain hose cap to catch draining water.
  3. Twist the drain hose cap counterclockwise to slowly remove it and drain the water.
  4. After the water is drained, remove the filter and clean it with a soft toothbrush.
  5. Inspect the filter housing and remove any visible dirt or debris.
  6. Reinsert the filter, replace the cap, and turn it clockwise until it’s secure.
  7. Close the access panel cover.
