The 1255 water flow cartridge is built directly below the faucet handle and controls both volume and temperature. It is commonly used in Moen single handle faucets produced after 2009 (date varies based on style and model).

Preparation:

  • The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
  • Recommended Tools: Pliers
  • The following instructions assume the handle and associated handle pieces have been removed. For additional details, visit solutions.moen.com and select the type of faucet you are repairing. The faucet guide will contain specific information on the handle assemblies associated with that style of product .

Moen manufactures many types of faucets that use the 1255 cartridge. The different faucet categories are based on where the on/off handle is located. Refer to the images below based on your handle location.

Note: Your faucet handle is connected directly to the cartridge.

Removing The Cartridge

1. Using pliers, unthread the black or brass hexagonal retainer nut (#1) counter-clockwise.

2. Pull the cartridge (#2) out of the faucet.

Note: It is highly recommended to clean and flush the valve body before installing the new cartridge (#1). See Valve Body Cleaning and Flushing for additional details.

Installing The Cartridge

1. Line up the three ribs on the cartridge (#2) with the three grooves inside of the valve body. The cartridge (#2) will only fit in one way (See Images)

2. Tighten the black or brass hexagonal retainer nut (#1) by hand until tight, then using pliers, rotate an additional 90° (1/4 turn) with a wrench. See Related Articles for how to reassemble your handle mechanism.

How do I identify my Moen kitchen faucet cartridge?

Exact model numbers can be found on your box or on your instruction sheet. If unavailable, you may find the general family series number on the back of the spout (non pullout).

How do I know if I have a Moen 1222 or 1225?

To tell if you need a 1222 or 1225 Moen cartridge, check how your faucet turns on the water. If you need to pull out the handle you need the Moen 1225 cartridge while if you only need to rotate it to adjust the water temperature you need the Moen 1222 cartridge.
