What is a Least Common Denominator (LCD)?

The least common denominator, also known as lowest common denominator or smallest common denominator of a set of fractions with denominators (a, b, c...) is the smallest positive integer that is divisible by each denominator in the set. In the simplest case we have just two numbers, a and b, and we can use the notation LCD(a, b). The LCD is the least common multiple (LCM) of the fractions' denominators.

The least common denominator calculator will help you find the LCD you need before adding, subtracting, or comparing fractions.

One way to understand the least common denominator is to list all whole numbers that are multiples of the two denominators. For example, for the fractions 1/3 and 2/5 the denominators are 3 and 5.

The multiples of 3 are: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33...
The multiples of 5 are: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50...

The multiples are common for both numbers are called common multiples, while the one with the lowest value is the least common multiple (LCM) and it is the least common denominator (LCD) for these fractions. In this case that is the number 15. You can verify this using our LCD calculator.

    How to calculate LCD?

The easiest way is, of course, to use our least common denominator calculator above, as it can handle LCD calculations for many denominators at once and you can enter them any way you like - separated by commas, spaces, tabs, new lines, etc. However, if you are not allowed to or don't want to use a calculator and need to do the math by yourself, you can use an algorithm or prime factorization, through which the calculations are simplified.

An algorithm that is simple to follow, but may take a large number of steps(!) is thus: given a finite sequence of positive integers X = (x1, x2, ..., xn) where n is larger than 1, start the algorithm and on each step m increase the least element of the sequence by adding to it the corresponding element from the initial sequence, resulting in a new sequence in which all elements remain the same, but the lowest value has been increased. Stop when all elements in the sequence are equal, as their common value is the LCD of sequence X (LCD(X)).

This online Least Common Denominator Calculator (or LCD calculator) finds the least common denominator of fractions and integers. Enter the set of numbers in the input field of the calculator and click the ‘Calculate’ button. You can paste the input data copied from a spreadsheet or csv-file or enter manually using comma, space or enter as separators. You can choose the separator type to be used in the output set of rewritten with the least common denominator fractions (comma or space). Note, that all the fractions should be presented in the form integer1/integer2 with no spaces in between. In case of mixed numbers (mixed fractions) they should be expressed in the form of improper fractions.

Least Common Denominator

In mathematics, the least common denominator or the lowest common denominator (LCD) is the lowest common multiple of the denominators of a set of fractions. Finding the LCD is important because all fractions need to have the same denominator when you are doing addition, subtraction or comparing operations with them.

In this Least Common Denominator Calculator we find the lowest common multiple (LCM) of the denominators using the same algorithm as in our Least Common Multiple Calculator. This number is the same as the least common denominator. Then all the input numbers (fractions) are rewritten using this LCD or, as they say, are reduced to a common denominator. Mixed numbers (mixed fractions) and integers are expressed in the form of improper fractions.

Hi everybody out there, I am caught up here with a set of algebra questions that I find very hard to solve . I am taking Algebra 2 course and need help with least common multiple with exponents calculator. Do you know of any good quality math help software ? To be frank, I am a little skeptical about how useful these software products can be but I really don’t know how to solve these questions and thought it is worth a try.

I do understand what your problem is, but if you could elaborate a bit on the areas in which you are facing difficulty , then I might be in a better position to help you out . Anyhow I have some advice for you, try Algebrator. It can solve a wide range of questions, and it can do so within minutes. And that’s not it , it also gives a detailed step-by-step description of how it arrived at a particular answer. That way you don’t just solve your problem but also get to understand how to go about solving it. I found this software to be particularly useful for solving questions on least common multiple with exponents calculator. But that’s just my experience, I’m sure it’ll be good no matter what the topic is .

I can vouch for that. Algebrator is the numero Uno piece of software for solving algebra assignments. Been using it for a while now and it keeps on amazing me. Every homework that I type in, Algebrator gives me a correct answer to it. I have never enjoyed learning algebra assignment on parallel lines, linear inequalities and rational expressions so much before. I would advise it for sure.
