This set is housed in second state publishers slipcase that features Barbara Remington's artwork in black, white and red. The Barbara Remington Triptych artwork, which Tolkien objected to, with him wondering where the idea's for the illustrations originated. The answering salvo of the "War over Middle- Earth". To establish a new copyright, Tolkien was asked to submit new material to create a new Edition, and so secure their copyright beyond question. Tolkien conducted a personal campaign against Ace Books in letters to his American fans. The "War over Middle-earth' was fought in the popular press, with the publicity contributing to increased sales and popularity. Within a year, Ace gave in to public pressure. They agreed to print no more copies, and they negotiated royalties to be paid to Tolkien. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #2473

The Lord of the Rings, Ace Books, Pirated Edition in Custom Leather Slipcase

Tolkien, J.R.R.

New York: Ace Books, 1965. Jack Gaughan. 1st Edition. Soft cover. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. These are the infamous Ace Books "Pirated Edition" from 1965. The opening salvo of the "War over Middle- Earth". A Very Good Plus set of this notorious edition. The books show some wrinkling of the spines along with a fold to the front cover of The Two Towers. A little spine lean to The Return of the King. The covers still show good colors, with some rubbing and a little color loss to lower edge of The Two Towers. Only the Two Towers has a previous owners name, no other writing. This is the only paperback 'Lord of the Rings' to be printed based on later printings of the 1st Edition. All others were based on the revised 2nd editions. Houghton Mifflin, seemed to have been in technical violation of the law by having imported too many copies printed by Allen & Unwin. Ace Books took notice of the sales and overseas production of the books, (which are marked, 'Printed in Great Britain'), determined that LotR's had fallen into the public domain in the United States, and launched their own edition in spring 1965. {Hammond and Anderson, pg 104} So to secure their American copyright, Tolkien was asked to submit new material to create a new Edition, and so secure their copyright beyond question. This set of books has darkened pages, from the highly acidic paper, still not near as bad as many copies. A custom slipcase featuring Tolkien's Ring and Eye device on one side with Tengwar Title and Author, and his JRRT monogram gilt stamped on the rear of the case. Makes for a beautiful presentation of these classic books. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #2462

The Lord of the Rings, 2nd UK Edition in Custom Leather Slipcase

Vol I: The Fellowship of the Ring is an 7th impression published in 1973. Vol II: The Two Towers is an 9th impression published in 1974. Vol III: The Return of the King is a 9th impression, published in 1974. All three volumes are in Near Fine condition with the top edge stained red, clean and bright textblock, with no previous owners name, nor other writing. The original red cloth boards are clean and bright, no bumped corners, the tip of one corner of The Return is bleached white. No foxing or offsetting to the endpapers, there are a couple of faint tape ghosts to the front free endpaper of The Fellowship, hardly noticeable. The red topstain is faded to the final two books, not the first. Original maps are in still in place, in excellent condition, no tears or extra folds. The Near Fine dustjackets show beautifully. These are the later impressions of the 2nd Edition that appear with a differently colored background to the dustjackets. The Fellowship is a dark green color, the Two Towers is a purple color, and The Return a brown color. A lovely opportunity for this significant and collectable set of books. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. The Lord of the Rings, Original Green Publishers Slipcase

Tolkien, J.R.R.

New York: Ballantine Books, 1965. A. 2nd Edition. Soft cover. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, Original Green Publishers Slipcase. A set of the 'only authorized' paperback's, first published by Ballantine in October 1965. This set consists of the first boxed set of The Lord of the Rings in the scarce original green publisher's slipcase. The slipcase is showing some wear to the corners and edges, small split on one side neatly repaired. The Fellowship of the Ring is the 4th printing of March 1966, The Two Towers is the 3rd printing of June 1966, and The Return of the King is the 1st printing of December 1965. These are all in Very Good Plus/Near Fine condition, with a few light creases to the spines and a bit of discoloring to the white areas. The Two Towers and Return of the King appear to be unread. No previous owner's name in the books. Remarkable condition considering over 50 years old. The set of books have the Barbara Remington Triptych artwork, in black and white, which Tolkien objected to, wondering where the idea's for the illustrations originated. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. The Lord of the Rings, UK First Edition, Early Impressions, in Custom Leather Slipcase

Tolkien, J.R.R.

London: Allen & Unwin, 1954. J.R.R. Tolkien. First Edition. Original Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by George Allen & Unwin, 1954/54/55 1st UK Edition set with each book in its original dustjacket. The Fellowship of the Ring is a 2nd impression, dated December 1954, less than 6 months after the 1st impression was released. The 2nd impression is significant for the errors introduced when the printers hurriedly reset the type to fill the 2nd order, without the publishers knowledge. Having broken down the original typeset, they reset the type, without offering proofs or even acknowledging it had been reset. Introducing numerous errors to the text, as well as incorporating a few of Tolkien's corrections. Many of the errors have remained in print to this day. The Two Towers is a stated 2nd impression in a 3rd impression dustjacket. This is the correct dustjacket for this book, as it lacks the 1955 date below the publisher on the Title page indicating it is actually the 3rd impression, with the printer omitting the 3rd impression date in the print history on the verso of the title page. The Return of the King is a 1st impression published October 20th, 1955. This copy is the 1st State, as per Hammond & Anderson corrected opinion, lacking the signature mark '4' and not having the slipped type on page 49. Correspondence with Wayne Hammond has indicated he has revised his original definition of the 1st state, from what was described in the Tolkien Bibliography, making this book the first state. The dustjacket for the Return is not the 1st State, having the blurbs on the rear flap. All original maps are present and in Near Fine condition. The Fellowship of the Ring map is the 1st State with a red dot off the coast of Umbar. An extraordinary set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. All show considerable tanning and darkening to the dustjackets, while the books remain clean and bright, without foxing and only a slight amount of offsetting from the dustjackets flaps. A previous owners sticker under the front flap of The Fellowship, no other names or writing in any of the books. The original boards are all clean and bright, with shiny gilt on the spines of the last two books with The Fellowship tarnished. The red topstain is quite faded on the Fellowship, while still clear on the Return, dusty on The Two Towers. The dustjackets are uniformly darkened and soiled, with some fading to the red lettering on the spines. The Fellowship is the only one price clipped, also the only one with tape ghosts to the back side where a previous owner reinforced some edges and folds. One small chip to upper rear fold on the Fellowship dustjacket, rubbing and minor loss to the spine and flap folds noted. The Two Towers dustjacket shows some rubbing and minor loss to the flap folds, no other loss noted. The Return dustjacket has slightly more loss to the top and bottom of the spine folds, as well as rubbing and minor loss to the flap fold areas. An early matched set of First Editions of this classic of fantasy literature, with a custom red leather covered slipcase, to protect and house these 'precious' books. Any questions, please feel free to inquire. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #2439

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Four Paperback Book Boxset from 1974, Still Sealed in Shrinkwrap.

Tolkien, J.R.R.

New York: Ballantine Books, 1974. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Mass Market Paperback. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. A four volume paperback set housed in the Publishers original Red covered slipcase, featuring the Heraldic symbols that were drawn by J.R.R. Tolkien. These illustrations include the ones designed to represent Feanor, Idril Celebrindal, Earendil, Luthien Tinuviel, Fingolfin, Elwe, Luthien Tinuviel and Finwe. This is one of the earliest published sets that includes all four books, The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. This is also the first set to feature the illustrations by J.R.R. Tolkien, as the covers of the book and slipcase, rather then the Barbara Remington designs as found on previous issues. As this set is still sealed it is not possible to tell the exact printing or publishing date, however the exterior of the case does note the Heraldry designs are copyright of George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1973. Also the numbers on the spines of the books match up with another set that all were issued in March of 1974, one of the earlier sets in this edition. Hammond and Anderson's, A Descriptive Bibliography notes that "after the 40th (March 1973) and no later than the forty-second (September 1973)", the Hobbit was sold in sets with the Lord of the Rings, housed "in a slipcase, gold (or red) printed paper over boards, featuring Heraldic devices by Tolkien." This design was used until 1983, when the covers were changed again. So this set is from that period, 1973 - 1983. Very unusual to find a set that has not been opened after 30 or 40 years. The case shows one bumped corner, shrinkwrap is still intact with a few scattered holes and splits to the shrinkwrap that are common, but the spines of the four books are in perfect condition. They do not appear to be faded or tanned in any way. A perfect find for the collector. Interior photos and photos of the covers are from another opened set, just for illustrative purposes. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #2435

Published by Harper Collins in 1991, the Centenary Edition three volume set housed in its original publishers red slipcase, featuring the title and author stamped in gold to the sides, along with the Centenary device to the rear boards. The dustjackets feature some of John Howe's most famous illustrations, with a Gold Band to the top and bottom with the runes in black. All dustjackets in Very Good Plus/Near Fine condition with minor rubbing and a bit of loss to the flap folds on The Fellowship. None of the dustjackets show any fading to the red lettering on the spine as so often found. A very uncommon and extremely hard to find set, lovely condition, bound in green cloth with title, author, publisher and Tolkien monogram in gold to the spines of the books. None of the dustjackets are price clipped, all in lovely condition. The edges of the textblocks are clean and bright, unfoxed. An exceptional set of books quite hard to find in this lovely condition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #2434

The Lord of the Rings, 1 Volume Edition in Custom Leather Slipcase

Tolkien, J.R.R.

London, Sydney, Wellington: Unwin Hyman, 1988. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. This is the 1st impression (1988) of this lovely edition, featuring the dustjacket artwork by Roger Garland. A Near Fine copy of the book, in a New Custom Dark Blue Leather Slipcase. This edition is a bit unusual and quite hard to find, especially in this lovely condition. The book is bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, and features a navy blue silk ribbon marker. The book is in Near Fine condition with it's matching Near Fine dustjacket. No previous owners names or any other writing noted. The 1st impressions were issued without any maps, which were reinstated in the 2nd and 3rd impressions, and would have been spread over the last few pages of the book. Is Lord of the Rings based on a true story?

The events in that part of the book may be fictional, but the emotions are almost autobiographical. The Lord of the Rings is based on dozens (and possibly hundreds) of stories drawn from ancient mythology, medieval legend, the Bible, and real historical events.

How many original Lord of the Rings books are there?

The work is divided internally into six books, two per volume, with several appendices of background material. Some later editions print the entire work in a single volume, following the author's original intent.

Is The Fellowship of the Ring a classic book?

For the most part, yes. It is definitely my favorite novel by Tolkien, if not my favorite fantasy novel. If you haven't already given this classic a read, it will definitely be worth your time.

Is the Amazon Lord of the Rings based on a book?

For the Newbies, It's Based on Epic Source Material Chances are fairly high you already know about the source material of this particular Amazon series, but in case you don't: Amazon's “The Lord of the Rings” series is based on author J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novel series of the same name.
