April 2021 was a busy month in the beauty world. We saw new launches from Glossier, Olaplex, Glow Recipe and, of course, NYX. I was super excited to get my hands on the NYX Bare With Me Luminous Tinted Skin Serum. I liked the Skin Veil and was hoping that this would have a similar, yet somewhat improved, formula.

The serum comes in five shades, which doesn’t really sound like a lot. However, they are spread out across the spectrum. And, because the product is so lightweight, it is kind of meant to blend to match your skin tone.

I picked up the palest shade ‘Universal Light’. Let’s see how I got on with it!

What is it?

NYX describes this product as a tinted power-serum that’s designed to even skin tone and texture while providing a dewy, luminous finish. It’s infused with tremella mushroom extract and a handful of other plant oils to ensure a lasting glow and to offer all-day hydration.

What are the standout ingredients?

Argan oil – A plant oil that regulates sebum production and improves the skin’s moisture barrier.

Mushroom extract – A plant extract that’s has hydrating and brightening properties. It’s rich in polysaccharides – sugar molecules which help the skin retain water.

Jojoba seed oil – A humectant that keeps the skin hydrated and reduces inflammation.

Tocopheryl acetate – A form of vitamin E which helps protect the skin from free radicals and promotes skin healing.

How should you use this product?

The NYX Tinted Skin Serum is marketed as a super lightweight substitute for foundation. Therefore you should apply it the same way you would any other base. I started off by cleansing my face, then I moisturised, and finally I went in with this serum.

I tried using this product with both a brush and a beauty blender. However, I found that the sponge absorbed way too much serum, so I would 100% recommend going down the brush route.

How do I feel about…?

THE SCENT

I quite like the scent of this serum. It smells pretty much like most of the other NYX foundations I’ve tried: sweet and sort of fruity.

THE PACKAGING

The packaging was actually a big part of my decision to buy this product. I was so intrigued by the applicator/dropper (I don’t know what you would call it haha!), it just stood out to me.

The bottle itself is glass, but the nozzle is made out of a soft plastic material that allows it to be squeezed. To use the serum you need to remove the small pink cap on the top. Read: do not unscrew the whole lid!

While this mode of application definitely means that you can better control how much product is dispensed, I actually found it really difficult to squeeze the serum out. The bottle is kind of in the way so you have to awkwardly position your hand to reach for the dropper.

THE COVERAGE AND FINISH

I really wanted to like this product … and I actually did love the finish of it! It made my skin look dewy and fresh, it didn’t cling to any dry patches and it evened out the texture.

Unfortunately, it was the colour payoff that let it down for me. It’s described as a serum, not a foundation, so I didn’t expect there to be too much coverage. However, I felt like this gave me basically no coverage at all (despite my best efforts to build it up).

I imagined that it would have the same amount of coverage as a tinted moisturiser, but in my experience it turned out to be even sheerer!

THE SUSTAINABILITY ASPECT

As with all NYX products, this tinted skin serum is cruelty-free. You’ll be pleased to know that it’s also vegan as it does not contain any animal-derived ingredients.

Though I can’t find anything in regards to sustainability on the NYX website, I think it’s safe to assume that parts of the packaging can be recycled. Simply remove the plastic elements, wash/clean out the bottle and the glass should be able to go in with your regular recycling.

When the serum’s rubbed in you can see that it does offer hydration, but not so much coverage.

Overall thoughts

While there are certain things I like about this product, I wouldn’t buy it again. In all honesty, I’m not a massive fan of high coverage foundations and my general preference is for lighter formulas. But I would like my base to at least conceal blemishes and PIH just a tiny, tiny bit.

I felt that, though this serum provided a nice glow, it didn’t really even out my skin tone or hide any redness. As mentioned before, when I tried to apply it, it almost blended into nothing … which isn’t exactly ideal. I was expecting sheer, but I wasn’t really prepared for just how sheer it would be!

I also think it is quite expensive for the amount you actually get. It’s priced at £13 in most stores and that’s for 12.6ml of product. When you consider that the standard foundation size is 30ml, it would (in many cases) be better value to buy a high-end foundation instead. Plus, given how light it is and the amount of product you use each time, I can see this serum going down pretty quickly.

Overall, I’d say that this serum would be perfect for those who like a no-makeup, your-skin-but-better look or even those who are just starting to wear foundation. But for people who desire just a little more coverage, I’d suggest going for the NYX Skin Veil instead as the colour payoff is significantly better.
