I view UHIMRP as an extended family that emphasizes teamwork between our faculty, residents, students, and program staff. We aim to provide exceptional patient care, and to cultivate an optimal learning environment that is characterized by collegiality, shared responsibility, and professionalism.
Hawaii is a special place with rich diversity, and the spirit of Aloha should guide our interactions with patients and colleagues.

Accreditation Status
In April 2020, the ACGME’s Review Committee for Internal Medicine granted the Program “Continued Accreditation” status with commendation for substantial compliance with the ACGME’s Program Requirements, without any citations.
Board Certification
Residency
Our curriculum fulfills ACGME Competency-based requirements in Medical Knowledge, Patient Care, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, and Systems-based Practice. With our emphasis on evidence-based medicine, critical appraisal of the literature, and the ongoing need for self-education, our graduates are well-prepared for a spectrum of challenges they will face in their careers.
Faculty
There are over 80 full and part-time faculty with academic appointments in the Department of Medicine, and approximately 300 board-certified volunteer clinical faculty who work with residents. One of the unique features of Hawai‘i is its multicultural character, which is also true of our residency program, patient population, and faculty. While required ambulatory rotations and inpatient teaching rounds are the responsibility of full-time faculty, we utilize community hospitals and outpatient continuity clinic sites that allow residents to interact with a variety of physicians in practice who are also dedicated faculty. Thus, residents experience a variety of approaches to patient management, as well as the traditional clinical teaching structure of university-associated programs.
