My father was a major player at Mobil Oil when what became Mobil1 was being invented / developed / tested. So I feel like I grew up with the stuff as it was routine-coversation for me for years. The engine-lab test results in particular sounded like something-impossible to me: millions of hour/miles with zero engine wear and so forth.
Fast forward to 2001 and I bought a new Triumph Bonneville on Valentines Day. It came with Mobil1 oil in it and used nothing else for 35,000 miles of some pretty hard running. With a fair amount of it 2-up and/or towing a trailer. And riding by myself I tend to especially run it hard. <g>
One day my friend knocked it off the side-stand and the aluminum shift lever broke. The shifter-cross-shaft was also damaged and replacing it involved removing the engine/clutch side covers. I have had hundreds of engine apart in my life and they are generally filthy inside. But the Bonneville was literally immaculate inside - really startlingly clean. I decided that I would replace the wet-clutch plates while I was already in there but they had to be ordered. So while I was waiting I pulled the pressure plate and mic-ed the clutch plates - and . . . . . I found them All to be Identical to the original specs out of the shop manual. Zero wear? After 35K of me flogging the bike? Say what? <g>
I was 'Convinced' and have very strictly used nothing else but Mobil1 since then. <g>

My daughter has a doctorate but is pretty air-brained and apparently stupid otherwise. She has a Subaru Legacy - either 2016 or 2017 and she drives like an angry moonshiner everywhere she goes - it is already half beat to death. It has always had Mobil1 oil in it. Last year I was away for a while and when I got back my truck battery was bad so I borrowed her Subaru to go get a new one.

Well; the dash looks like the bridge of the the Starship Enterprise - filled with lights - and I just started up and took off. But after about a mile or so I noticed one of the lights looked like an oil can. I immediately shut down and dug out the manual. Turned out to be the no-oil-pressure light so I called her -

Last Saturday (this was a Thursday)
So I got off the phone and thought: now what? Am I supposed to WALK a mile or more to get oil? Pissed off; I just started the engine and went to the nearest gas station. Filled the gas tank and put in FOUR QUARTS of oil to get the level to the fill mark. Later I looked in the manual and found that the engine takes 3.9 quarts of oil.
My point being that either Subaru builds one hell of a bulletproof engine - or Mobil1 oil is something beyond even my imagination. <g>
I left the oil out of a small block chevy one time and within a mile the engine wouldn't turn. So how is it possible that my daughter's Subaru ran For A Week without oil and is still apparently fine? It didn't make any alerting-noises (to my tuned mechanical ears) while Totally empty of oil and it still doesn't. That no-oil incident happened about 6000 miles ago and so far as I can tell the engine is fine.
I gotta tell ya: it just does Not seem Possible!
But anyway: for what it's worth - I give more credit to the Mobil1 oil that I am familiar with than to the Subaru engine design that I am not familiar with. <g>

What’s your most preferred oil and filter go r your truck? I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 Z71 5.3L what should I use? Currently running Mobil 1 high mileage full synthetic 5w30. I’m wondering if there’s a better oil that’s more suited for my truck? I will say the high mileage Mobil 1 does Not have the “dexos” stamp of approval.
I’m thinking of next run to go 10w30 (comb or synth) (m1 or different) with an ac delco filter, to see if I can tell a difference. A local mechanic said this small knock I have (I have another thread about it) is just fine and that I should use an ac delicious filter because they have something different with their filter that prevents it (I don’t know). So I was going to give it a shot.
