Why does my sore throat make my ear hurt

If you’re experiencing earache and jaw pain along with your sore throat, there are a few possible causes that might be reason for concern.

These symptoms may indicate a case of tonsillitis or its closely related cousin, strep throat. Tonsillitis is a swelling of the tonsils and can be either bacterial or viral in nature. Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the tonsils which also leads to swelling.

Your tonsils are located at the back of your throat and the top of your mouth where they help filter out bacteria and prevent infections.

Sore Throat

When your tonsils encounter more bacteria than they can handle, they become overwhelmed and swell up. This swelling causes the soreness in your throat.

Jaw Pain

The swelling of your tonsils often extends up from your neck and throat, into your jaw, causing swollen lymph nodes and jaw pain.

Ear Pain

Also located in your throat is the eustachian tube, which drains away the fluid from your inner ear. When your tonsils become swollen, the eustachian tube can become blocked, causing fluid to be backed up in your inner ear. This fluid buildup leads to pain in your ear.

Other Symptoms

People suffering from tonsillitis often also experience a loss of voice, difficulty swallowing, fever, chills, and headaches. Strep throat victims can often experience painful swallowing, fever, headache, abdominal pain, body aches and loss of appetite.

What to do about a Sore Throat with Ear and Jaw Pain

If you’re experiencing the symptoms of either tonsillitis or strep throat, visit your local FastMed and have an examination performed by one of our medical professionals. We’ll check your tonsils for any swelling and can administer a strep test and throat swab. If tonsillitis or strep throat are detected, antibiotics are typically prescribed to fight off the infection.

People with recurring infections may require a tonsillectomy to remove the tonsils entirely.

In the meantime, get plenty of rest, drink cold water to help ease the pain in your throat and try gargling with salt water or using a throat lozenge. You can also take Tylenol or Ibuprofen to alleviate the pain and any fever you might have.

Experiencing shart pains in the throat and/or ears can be incredibly unpleasant, and very concerning if it persists. While the most common cause of a sore throat is the common cold, there can be other underlying causes. In most cases, a sore throat will subside in a few days. If it doesn't, it's probably time to consult your doctor or even see your ENT.

What symptoms are associated with sharp ear and throat pain?

  • Mild to severe pain in the back of your throat
  • A dry or scratchy feeling in your throat
  • Pain when swallowing or talking
  • Swollen glands in your neck or jaw
  • Muffled hearing
  • A feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Fluid drainage from the ear

You may also find that your symptoms are accompanied by a headache, fever, or a general feeling of being unwell.

Potential Causes

Aside from the common cold, other causes of ear and throat pain can include...

  • Tonsillitis
  • Allergies
  • Acid Reflux
  • Mononucleosis (Mono)
  • Strep Throat
  • Tooth Infection or Abscess
  • Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD)
  • Chronic Sinusitis

All of these issues and conditions require specific treatments to address their root causes. It is important to seek treatment from your doctor or ENT to determine the root cause of your symptoms.

Environmental Irritants

Inhalation of certain substances can cause these symptoms as well, some of these irritants can include...

  • Smoke
  • Chlorine
  • Wood dust
  • Oven cleaner
  • Industrial cleaning products
  • Cement

If you are regularly around these irritants, it would be wise to take steps to use protection or to minimize your exposure to them in any way possible.

As stated earlier, most throat and ear pain will pass within a few days, but if it lingers, gets worse, or is accompanied by fever and other symptoms, you should seek medical treatment ASAP. If you are in the Athens/North GA area, give Ashford Clinic a call!

Why does my throat and ear hurt on one side?

Many things can cause a sore throat on one side, even if you don't have tonsils. These include post-nasal drip, canker sores, tooth infections, and other conditions. You might only have throat pain, or you might have additional symptoms, such as an earache.

Can sore throat and earache be Covid?

Is an ear infection a symptom of COVID-19? Ear infections and COVID-19 share few common symptoms, most notably fever and headache. Ear infections are not a commonly reported symptom of COVID-19.

Why do I have ear pain when I swallow?

A common cause of ear pain when swallowing is an ear infection. Most ear infections are caused by a bacterial or viral infection in the middle ear. They usually cause swelling, fluid buildup, and irritation inside your ear, which can cause pain. Ear infections are common in children, but adults can also get them.

How should I sleep with a sore throat?

Sleeping on an incline can help you breathe easier and help clear mucus, which drip down the back of your throat and cause irritation. Rather than propping yourself up by using pillows, raise the head of your bed.
