10th gen civic steering wheel cover

5.0 out of 5 stars Great upgrade for my 2017 Civic

The description and instructions make it sound deceptively easy to install. It's a novice ++ to intermediate skill job and it takes several hours. I bought the wrap 6 months ago and tried to install it in the car with the airbag in place. That was a waste of 2 hours of my life. I was going to return it but life got busy. Recently I decided to try again and this time pull the steering wheel. What I found after I pulled the airbag on my Civic is that there is enough play in the plastic backing to tuck the excess leather in (you'll understand if you get it). So there's no need to pull the wheel but if you can it will be easier. The end result is really nice and worth the effort, in my opinion. The steering wheel has a nicer look than factory leather bound steering wheels and it feels better too. You'll need a phillips screwdriver, a T30 torx head tool, a socket wrench with 3"extension and a multitool (Leatherman) is handy but not required. The bolt holding the steering wheel is a 10mm Allen and it requires a breaker bar to loosen. Also, a standard steering wheel puller from Auto Zone doesn't work. None of the bolts fit the steering wheel. You may have to go to a fastener store like tractor supply and get fine thread bolts to use in place of the ones in the puller kit. There is an option with this leather wrapping to get red thread which I think would look cool but I have an LX model and that would be the only red on the car. I'm glad I got black because I made some threading mistakes that are not noticeable with black thread. Finally, the Chenglish instructions are not great so look up videos on youtube for threading guidance. There's one video of a guy working on a BMW with red and blue accent thread and beige primary string. It helped a lot.

The cover comes inside of a small box with thread, double sided tape, two needles, a thimble, a plastic scraper, scissors, and a set of poorly translated english instructions. The instructions aren't really that useful so I watched some youtube videos on how to install it instead. For the wrap cover itself, it feels alright, the quality is decent, and while it is better then the hard cheap plastic of the lower trim honda models, the oem leather is much higher quality. But this is $36 bucks while Honda charges thousands more so keep that in mind. The thread is basic and does the job.

Here is how I recommend doing it- First off some youtube videos have the guy using double tape. The double sided tape is REALLY effective and will stick 2 things together better than some glues. That's why I DO NOT recommend using it. The tape itself is yellow and a pain to get off, if you make a mistake or want to get rid of it in the future, it's a mess. If you really want to use tape, just grab some generic tape you have lying around and use that instead. When stitching the wheel itself, make sure you don't skip stitches. Yes it saves a little bit of time, but especially on areas with bumps and curves like the 9 and 3 thumb gribs and towards the bottom spoke, you need every stitch to pull the leather together. Here's the problem with this product, there's not enough leather where you need it. In places where the steering wheel cover stitches the perforated and smooth portions of the leather together, there isn't enough leather to fully enclose it around the steering wheel. This also happens at the 9 and 3, where there are cutouts for your thumbs. Even at the top of the steering wheel, I had to strain the leather really hard for it to go all the way around the steering wheel and not leave a gap in the middle. On the OEM leather, you don't see the strain marks because they use enough leather so it goes around the wheel easily. I'm not sure exactly why it is like this but it just feels like the cover could use another quarter of an inch more leather all around so it goes around the wheel fully. Secondly the areas where the leather hangs out so you can insert it inside the plastic bits of the steering wheel to make it look more stock are a pain to shove in at the bottom.

Overall this is a 4-5 hour project depending on how fast you can pick up on things. Make sure you do this during the day because at night, even with dome lights and flashlights, there isn't enough light to see some stitches clearly. Every once in a while you might need to turn the wheel a bit to get a better angle so you'll have to start up the car. I didn't remove the steering wheel to do this and you don't really have to, but you could if you want and it would make it easier. But then you have to remove the steering wheel and put it back on which is a lengthy process itself. Here's another gripe I have about this cover, for $37 there are other "universal" kits on amazon that might not look as well integrated as this one will, but you can probably get something with a bit more leather and for cheaper too. I never purchased one of those so I can't say much about them, but you're paying a premium for this cover despite its flaws. If you want more of a cleaner look then this is probably your best bet, there are others like this out on ebay and aliexpress but from what I've seen, they all seem to be the same product but rebranded.

It's a decent product with it's flaws and is priced slightly higher than I would have liked. Still a great improvement over the hard plastic.

It's pretty decent. The leather is very complaint, soft and smooth to touch yet fairly tough. The stitches on the wheel, that is used to lace the cord in zig zag pattern is well spaced out. The lacing felt a bit short out of my packaging, but they did provide two needles. The double sided tape is almost a requirement if you do not want the leather to float on certain parts around the spokes. Installation did take couple hours, and some trial and error to perfect.

Few caveats that took down couple of stars each - the cut out is well done.
However, it may need some trimming around where they need to be tucked in. Tucking the leather under the plastic parts is really tough in some portions. I recommend taking the airbag off to remove the plastic bits to install this.
The pre-stitching used to lace this on isn't quite well lined up or thought out around the back side of 3 and 9. There is bit of a float below the lacing cords if the lacing if done in perfect zig-zag pattern. Normally, this won't be so bad if it wasn't right where I usually hook my thumb around the spokes...
Instruction is somewhat confusing in key areas, especially how to handing end of the threads and finishing around a bend/corner.

It does take time to sew it, yes, so be ready for that. Watch all those videos and read all those tips. I’d say - plan how you’re going to be sewing it ahead, think it through and only then start the process.
Definitely would need a well lit place and a couple of hours.
It took me about 4 hours to get it all done. But that’s due too my own mistakes along the process. It could’ve been done in 2 hours.
At the end of the day - well worth the money and the trouble. Gives such a nice feel to your car’s interior.
The leather is soft and very nice to the touch.
Used it for my 2017 Honda CRV which came with this annoying plastic steering wheel (I can’t believe you get this crap when you pay $30k for a vehicle)

If you ready to go through the sewing process - the result is sooo much better than throwing a standard case on the wheel.

Not worth the money it doesn’t fit 2017 Honda Civic. It doesn’t cover the whole steering wheel there’s a gap in between stitching and at the back there’s too much leather which won’t be tucked in your steering wheel plastic cover. I had to use double sided tape which it came with to stick the back leather to the steering wheel as the leather is too big it won’t get tucked in.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take your time with install!

Took me 3 hours but got it done. Overall happy with it. Hardest part was getting the stitching ends to look nice but the continuous parts were easy. Had to trim some of the flaps to make it look better but good overall. I could have made it look nicer if I went even slower but 3 hours was enough.

Install was fairly easy, however takes a LONG time (took me around 3 1/2 hours). It was worth it though. The soft leather is a huge improvement over plastic. It actually makes the car feel alot less cheap. (Installed on 2019 civic hatchback LX)
