My check engine light came on today and I took it to a local auto parts dealer for a scan. They told me it's a bad crankshaft sensor. Does anyone have an idea where it's located and how difficult of a job it is to change ?

Wouldn't this be covered under warranty?

Based on my search, it's on the passenger side of the block, just head of the tranny, behind the starter. It sounds like the starter has to be removed to replace the sensor.

Hopefully, someone with first-hand knowledge will chime in.

Mine, on the 2013 is located just below the Throttle Body on the passenger side of the engine block. You should see a wiring harness connected to it almost identical to the IAT sensor that is on the CAI. Not sure how you get it out.

I was thinking camshaft position sensor. Usually throws a P0344 code. Just in case it is the camshaft and not the crankshaft (P0016) attached is the location of the camshaft sensor.

From another forum: "The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) and Camshaft position sensor (CMP) work in harmony to control the spark/fuel delivery and timing. They both consist of a reluctor, or tone, ring which passes over a magnetic sensor, which generates a voltage, indicating position."

"The crankshaft sensor is part of the primary ignition system and functions as the "trigger". It detects the position of the crankshaft relays that information on to the PCM or the ignition module (depending on the vehicle) to control spark timing. The Camshaft position sensor detects the position of the camshafts and relays the information to the PCM. The PCM uses the CMP signal to identify the beginning of the injector sequence. What ties these two shafts and their sensors together is the timing belt or chain. The cam and crank should be precisely timed together. If the PCM detects that the Crank and Cam signals are out of time by a specific number of degrees, this P0016 (//www.obd-codes.com/p0016) code will set."

White Ghost, since this threads in the 2012 section and u have a 2008, I recommend starting your own thread in the 6th gen section, it may help u get a quicker reply.

Hi I have a 2010 dodge charger sxt 3.5l and I was driving and the car turn off on me 🤔 , I put it back in parking and the car started back up and my car has 151,000 miles on it , but had a lot of work done , from replacing some bearings to new spark plugs and lifters , etc , basically the whole top and in middle of engine has brand new parts, anyone know why? Is it the camshaft position sensor? Or?

Plug a scanner into the car's OBD2 port and see if any codes are logged. Best to use a scanner that can read all codes rather than just Pxxxx powertrain codes. The codes are not always conclusive as to the problem but they are a good starting point.
