His combined teaching and orthodontic skills, work ethic, integrity and sociability are unique and highly valued. We celebrate and thank you, Dr. Roberts, for your service to our program and to the American Association of Orthodontists.

Dr. James McNamara is awarded the AAO’s 2021 prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Needless to say, this award is greatly deserved. Dr. McNamara (Jim) is Professor Emeritus in the University of Michigan’s Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. UM ORTHODONTIC PROGRAM’S CENTENNIAL 2023

2023 marks the University of Michigan Orthodontic Program’s Centennial Anniversary.

In 1890, the University of Michigan, College of Dental Surgery was the first dental school to provide graduate dental education. In 1923, the University of Michigan, College of Dental Surgery became the first dental school to offer graduate training in orthodontics leading to a Master of Science degree. In 1928 the school name changed to the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry. In 1938, construction began on the Kellogg building, which was built specifically for postdoctoral graduate dental education. UM Orthodontics has remained in this location since that time. Our program has a long and storied history that has led to our honored traditions and continuous focus on excellence in orthodontic education, patient care and research. Today we continue to work hard to graduate residents with the array of skills needed to become a master clinician. We will provide a more complete history of the department in both written and visual form during our 2023 Centennial Celebration. Lots of fun stories to share, including your own. This will be a great time to catch up with classmates, reconnect with faculty, and make new friends.

We will be holding events in celebration of this 100th year anniversary over the 2023 Moyers Symposium weekend, including a University of Michigan Alumni and Friends Reception at “The Big House”.

Please mark your calendars for what should be a fun and exciting weekend: March 3-5, 2023.

Save the date: March 3-5, 2023!
