All Creatures Great and Small might be a warm hug in television form, but it also has some very compelling plot threads that viewers have become highly invested in.

The characters have been under particular strain recently, with the series currently exploring how difficult life was during the days of the Second World War when families were torn apart and resources were scarce.

This is plainly in focus during this year's All Creatures Great and Small Christmas special, when an evacuee comes to Darrowby and Mrs Hall ponders life away from cherished friend, Gerald.

Expect these storylines to influence events in the confirmed fourth season, with star Nicholas Ralph among those eager to find out more, telling RadioTimes.com that he was yet to receive any scripts for the next run.

There's no word yet on whether All Creatures will continue beyond season 4, but co-star Anna Madeley has expressed enthusiasm for the idea.

"As long as it has an audience who would like to watch it, [it] would be great," she said. "I mean, there's so many good stories out there that we can still use and it's been written so well, and we all have a lot of fun doing it. So, hopefully a long time."

For now, here's everything we know about All Creatures Great and Small season 4.

Channel 5 is yet to confirm a premiere date for All Creatures Great and Small season 4, but we can make a reasonable estimate based on the show's broadcast history: all three previous seasons have been released a year apart in September.

For that reason, it seems likely that the next batch of episodes will follow suit and head to Channel 5 in time for September 2023 – we'll update this page as soon as an official confirmation is made.

All Creatures Great and Small was renewed for seasons 3 and 4 at the beginning of 2022, with the episode order including two Christmas specials (the first of which recently aired).

Sebastian Cardwell, Deputy Director of Programmes at ViacomCBS Networks UK, said: "It is clear that our viewers adore James Herriot’s adventures in Darrowby and so do we at Channel 5. I am looking forward to us all being reunited with the Skeldale House family".

The cast of All Creatures Great and Small season 3. Helen Williams / Playground Entertainment

We don't have a confirmed cast list for All Creatures Great and Small season 4 just yet, but we would certainly expect the main All Creatures Great and Small cast to be back.

That includes Nicholas Ralph as countryside vet James Herriot and Rachel Shenton as his new wife, Helen, with the couple having tied the knot in the season 3 opener.

Imogen Clawson and Tony Pitts will also likely be back as Helen's family, and there could be a return for Patricia Hodge as Mrs Pumphrey, after she replaced the late Dame Diana Rigg in the role from season 2.

Here's a full list of the cast we would expect to return for All Creatures Great and Small season 4:

  • Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot
  • Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon
  • Rachel Shenton as Helen Alderson
  • Callum Woodhouse as Tristan Farnon
  • Anna Madeley as Mrs Audrey Hall
  • Imogen Clawson as Jenny Alderson
  • Tony Pitts as Richard Alderson
  • Patricia Hodge as Mrs Pumphrey
