Easy crock pot chicken and dumplings with canned biscuits

This delicious crockpot chicken and dumplings recipe using canned biscuits are so easy to make and great comfort food for a weeknight meal.

I feel like once I got my instant pot, I neglected my crockpot a bit. I still find, however, there are things I do like or prefer in my crockpot. So, I’m not ready to get rid of the crockpot just yet.

In fact, I have a sweet sticker on my crockpot that my friend got me that says “Unplug Me, Love Jack” This Is Us fans will totally get this!!! And it’s hard to get rid of an item that you’ve adorned with beloved stickers.

One of my favorite recipes, that I’ve used forever, just happens to be a crockpot recipe. I make it when I need easy but also want a little comfort. I’ve made it for years – over 15 years probably. It was an early adopted recipe in my marriage.

Crock Pot Chicken and Dumplings Ingredients

  • 2 cans of cream of chicken soup
  • 1 cup of chicken broth
  • 2-3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 can of biscuits (I usually get a plain version, nothing extra buttery or anything special)
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Helpful Notes About this Crockpot Chicken and Dumplings Recipe

  • If I don’t have an onion to dice up, I will use onion powder in a pinch. I don’t let that stop me from having dinner. One easy cooking hack I love is pre-diced frozen onions. I LOVE using these for an easy dinner option. And I don’t have to cry over dicing them!

How to Make Crock Pot Chicken and Dumplings

Simply, put your chicken breasts in your crockpot along with your diced onion and butter.

Sprinkle with your garlic powder.  (Sometimes, I get crazy and add dried herbs.)

Then, pour over the cream of chicken soup and the chicken broth. Stir the ingredients to combine them.

Place your lid on the crockpot and place on high for 4 hours, or low for 6-8 hours.

After cooking for 4 hours on low, or at least 6 hours on high, remove your lid and stir the mixture and break up the chicken into smaller chunks. (At this point, the chicken should literally fall apart when you touch it, so it shouldn’t be a hard task.)

Now, tear your biscuits into quarters and add them to the crockpot. I tend to use my hands and flatten them out a bit.

Now, push the dough down under the juices a little with a spoon before you put the lid back on.

Replace the lid and continue cooking for 30-45 minutes on high until the biscuits are cooked through!

What goes well with chicken and dumplings?

I find that green vegetables go well with chicken and dumplings to help round it out as a meal. You already have the protein and carbohydrates, so you want a healthy vegetable too. However, any good vegetable will work, even if it’s not green.

  • green beans
  • sliced cucumbers (In Eastern KY, garnish with a little salt and that’s all you need.)
  • sauteed zucchini
  • sauteed squash
  • wilted spinach
  • steamed carrots
  • salad
  • peas
