I enclosed the CO detector in a enclosed box with a hose from a car exhaust discharging directly into the box. Detector alarmed as described.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for taking with you on your travels to avoid a tragedy

We travel around the world and stay in hotels and airbnbs. Most do not have CO detectors, not even the airbnbs. Unlike the USA, CO detectors are not required in Europe or most other parts of the world. Every so often we read about a tragedy where people in a hotel are sick or have died due to a ventilation problem with the heating system and exposure to carbon monoxide. This is such a simple and inexpensive safeguard. It has a 10-year battery, so it is constantly working. And it is small and lightweight and can easily fit in hand or carry-on luggage for your travels. We hope it never sounds an alarm, but it is good to know it will do so if we need it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Built-in battery, Lightweight, Easy-to-read

This is a review of the First Alert Carbon Monoxide Detector.

Pros: It’s reasonably priced, easy to mount on a wall, lightweight, easy to read, displays the room temperature, and it’s simple to operate. It can be mounted to a wall, or placed on a flat surface. It has a built-in, non-replaceable, 10-year battery. You activate the battery by removing a thin plastic strip from the case of the detector.

Pro & Con: When the long lasting battery does finally fail, it can’t be replaced. Of course, if it does last the full 10-years, as advertised, the unit should probably be replaced, anyway.

Based on the fact that I’m still alive, I assume it effectively detects the absence of carbon monoxide in the air. If it ever fails to do so, I probably won’t be able to update this review. But, for now, I’m giving it all five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Could be better.

What I like: It doesn't have to be plugged in, runs on a battery that they say will last 10 years. We'll see. I can set it on a shelf instead of mounting it to a wall. If there is a dangerous level of CO it will display. I hope.

What I don't like: It will only display CO level if it is above some mystery level. If the level is low, or zero, it won't display that. If you try to display the CO level, and it is low, the device goes into test mode. Very annoying!! I don't need a room temperature display, I would rather see the actual CO level, even if it is zero.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compact CO detector, self contained with 10 year permanent battery; does not sound false alarms from ham radio signals :)

I got two of these to replace detectors in my home and I wall-mounted them (optional). I got these because I'm a ham radio operator and my old downstairs detector (Kidde Nighthawk) kept going off whenever I transmitted on the 40 meter band. After doing some online research I learned that this model is not susceptible to this. It turned out I needed to replace my old detector anyway since it was made in 2000 and they are only good for 10 years! (I also have read that Kidde did not improve their design to prevent false alarms from radio signals until 2004.) It is battery operated only-no AC power connection.

Anyway, these are compact and easy to install. Note: there is not a separate template for drilling the wall mount holes-it is printed at the bottom of the instruction sheet. My only beef with these new ones is that one of them was missing the mounting hardware in the package, so I had to get screws and anchors for that one on my own.

There is a small switch on the back to turn the unit on and there is a separate one-time use switch for deactivating the unit once it's service life is up. It also has a blue backlight to view the display in the dark, and it routinely displays the room temperature on the screen. One button on the top of the unit is used for turning on the backlight; if you press and hold, it sounds the alarm to test the unit.

What type of battery does a First Alert carbon monoxide alarm use?

Most detectors take AA or 9V batteries. Use brand-name Duracell, Energizer, or Eveready batteries with an expiration date 4+ years from today's date. Rechargeable batteries are not recommended.
