The seal is probably broken. Go to AutoZone or some auto parts store and buy a new gas cap. Then after you put the new gas cap on, disconect the positive battery terminal for 5 mins to reset the light. This should fix your problem.

i just bought the billett gas cap and had no probs.3 weeks later the gas cap light came on.the cap is new.i took it off and checked the seal.it was still correctly in place.the seal did show some flat areas.i ran my finger around the seal several times and tried to remove the flat areas.it was still on.i pulled into a auto zone and got a new cap.when i
cranked the jeep back up the light went out.i paid almost $70 for the billet cap and $17 for the new one.i will just hang on to it.any suggestions would be appreciated. Joined Jul 17, 2012 · 57 Posts
disconect the positive battery terminal for 5 mins to reset the light. This should fix your problem. Do not diconnect the positive cable. Always disconnect the negitive cable. Disconnecting the positive cable can cause a voltage spike that can be harmful to the PCM. Joined Oct 3, 2012 · 14 Posts

There are a few things in addition to the gas cap that will bring on the gas cap warning. It's telling you there is a leak somewhere in the Evaporative Emissions System. If it detects a leak, and it happens to be soon after you filled the gas tank, it will assume you have not properly installed the gas cap, and will give you that warning. Should I be looking for a leak or wait a day or two? If there is a leak will I notice a difference in performance? 01-11-2014, 03:06 PMJK Jedi Master

Why does my jeep keep saying check gas cap?If your Check Fuel Cap light comes on, it may simply be that you blanked and forgot to put the cap back on the tank. Fuel cap is not securely fastened: The Check Fuel Cap light can come on even if the gas cap is on. If the fuel cap is not completely fastened, the vehicle will not recognize that the cap is on.
Why is my gas cap light on but my gas cap is on?What the fuel cap indicator means. Simply put, if your fuel cap light is on, it means that the computer has detected a leak in the system, typically from a loose gas cap. If this light comes on while driving, pull over in a safe spot and re-secure the cap.
Is it OK to drive with gas cap light on?Some modern cars even have a fuel cap light. If either light stays on after you replace your gas cap, don't worry. You may need to drive for a while, even 100 miles (160 kilometers) or so, before your car's computer senses that everything's OK and the light resets.
How do I get my gas cap light to go off?Simply remove your gas cap and put it back in place. Turn your car on, and the engine light may already be reset. If not, it might take a few cycles of turning your car off and on to make it reset. In some cases, it helps to drive around for a few miles, too.
