What is the One Chip challenge?

The One Chip challenge has been popularised by the brand Paqui Chips, which challenges its participants to eat a single chip that is “made with the hottest peppers on the planet.”

The company’s website states that the chip is made using the Carolina Reaper, the spiciest pepper in the world, and also the scorpion pepper.

The challenge is to eat one chip and then wait for as long as you can before you wash it down it with something that provides relief.

Participants must wait as long as they can to eat or drink anything. They must strive to hold off for at least an hour to have succeeded in the challenge.

TikTok is teeming with videos of users taking part in the One Chip challenge. Most of them, predictably, cannot handle the heat.

Hot chip challenge sends high school students to hospital

Recently, three teens from California’s Lodi High School participated in the viral “one chip challenge,” but things didn’t go as planned.

Chelsea Vongehr, the school’s spokeswoman, told The Sacramento Bee: “We have had a number of our Lodi High students take part in the ‘one chip challenge’ on the school campus, which entails eating a chip that has been covered in pepper and hot sauce that causes the individual to react and become ill.

“We encourage our parents/guardians to speak with their children about the dangers of participating in this and other potentially harmful internet challenges.”

She added that the three students have returned to school since the incident took place.

In response to the incident, Paqui reportedly said in a Twitter message, “The Paqui #OneChipChallenge is notoriously hot, as our branding implies, and the product should be handled with extreme care.”

“Our #OneChipChallenge includes a safety disclaimer that it should not be ingested by individuals who are sensitive to spicy foods, allergic to peppers, nightshades, or capsaicin, or who are minors, pregnant or have medical conditions,” the company said.

The Carolina Reapers that Paqui used to make the chips this year checked in at 1.9 million Scoville units, according to Ed Currie of PuckerButt Pepper Company.
