McDonalds is arguably the biggest name in the global fast food industry and they serve an astonishing 68 million customers each day. This company has grown substantially over the years; from a simplified menu of hamburgers, potato chips and orange juice, they now serve a range of burgers, salads, wraps, breakfast items and desserts. Initially listed as a drive-in restaurant service, they have developed to include eat-in and take-out services in addition to the classical drive-in aspect. Their “Speedee Service System” was one of the largest contributors to the fast food industry as we know it today. This system increased the speed of service and decreased the food cost for every customer, solidifying McDonalds as one of the most convenient, affordable options across the globe.
HistoryThe company’s history can be traced back to 1940, when brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald decided to open a barbeque restaurant in San Bernardino, California. They quickly noticed that their most profitable item was their hamburgers and in 1948 they converted their restaurant into a hamburger stand. It was in 1948 that they introduced their “Speedee Service System” which was to revolutionize the fast food industry and create the blueprint of the industry model today. McDonald’s was a fast growing business and in 1953 the company began franchising and the first franchise was opened in Phoenix in 1953. Their second franchise was opened in the same year in Downey, California; this location holds the title for the oldest operating McDonald’s. In 1955 the founding brothers met Ray Kroc who saw the potential that the business had. After various disagreements between Kroc and the McDonalds, Kroc bought them out of the company completely and began global expansion. The famous ‘golden arches’ were made a trademark logo of the company in 1953, with the current version that we know and love being trademarked in 1968. Over the years, they have remained true to their core values: providing affordable, tasty, convenient food. With branches in 119 countries, they have proven their continued popularity time and time again. ReviewMcDonald’s have a variety of menu items for all the family: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken burgers, chicken, french fries, soft drinks, milkshakes, smoothies, sandwiches, wraps, fish options, salads, fruits, desserts and their world famous breakfast range. Within their breakfast range you can expect a variety of pancakes, sausage, coffee and orange juice. They also frequently have specialty menus which vary from location to location. This restaurant is certainly a family favorite, with modern, comfortable seating areas. Plus most locations are also able to cater for children’s birthday parties. Whether you’re eating in or heading to the drive through the staff are always friendly, helpful and efficient. Next time you stop off try their infamous Big Mac, it’s a firm favorite and absolutely delicious, not one to be missed. Or, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous try their specialty Angus Chipotle BBQ Bacon Burger, it’s a delight to the taste buds. This company has held its place as a family favorite by keeping its prices affordable, particularly in comparison to other well-known chains. A meal that includes a burger, french fries and a soft drink is around the $5 mark. McDonald’s has held its place in the nation’s hearts and stomachs for the past 76 years. While the chain has been criticized for being unhealthy and contributing to the global obesity epidemic; they have continued to grow regardless. They have created a solid reputation as a fast food chain that delivers quick, cheap meals that are full of flavor and they deliver on this promise in all of their 36,000 worldwide locations.
