How to tighten chain on chamberlain garage door opener

We often get calls about garage door chains Developing slack or becoming loose. Sometimes extremely loose word hangs a few feet under the garage door motor rail. This can happen whether you have a chain driver garage door opener or a belt driven garage door opener. Slack will naturally develop overtime as your garage door motor wears out,  in particular the Gear and sprocket assembly. Although counter intuitive, it is recommended not to tighten the chain or belt. It is better to let it operate with the slack. Reason being, tightening the belt or chain garage door mechanism will create additional pressure on the gear and sprocket assembly the prompting a failure on the garage door opener components. It is recommended to visually inspect the gear and sprocket assembly as many times slack on the chain will indicate deterioration in the condition of the assembly and the mechanical integrity of the components. Chamberlain and lift master garage door opener‘s have a durable design allowing them to work for many months even when the gear is broken. Some of our clients in Las Vegas and Henderson preferred to take preemptive measures and replace the gear, or motor all together, instead of waiting for a Component to break and have a potentially additional problem later.

If your garage door chain or belt is drooping significantly. This might indicate the gear is already broken and needs replaced.

If your garage door opener uses a chain drive, then it is probably like a lot of other garage doors. This opening system is one of the most popular options, but it can manifest a problem. Over time, the drive chain can loosen and create slack. Overall, this gives the opener less power to open and close the door. You may even see the chain hitting the door itself, creating one of the more annoying garage door noises.

However, if you have a loose chain, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to make a service call. Homeowners may be able to tighten it up themselves. However, if you are uncomfortable doing so, calling a service technician is the best course of action.

To tighten the drive chain, start by closing your garage door, turning off the power, and pulling the emergency release rope. These steps are all done for the sake of safety, and should be considered necessary.

Once done, using your user manual for the opener, locate the adjustment bolt. This bolt will have nuts on either side of it and is tightened by loosening the nut closest to the opener and tightening the nut on the other side. As you do this, the chain should tighten. You want the chain tight, but not so much that it is inflexible.

This is typically where homeowners get a little unsure of themselves. If you tighten a chain too much, you run the risk of it breaking. Typically you will want to tighten the chain just enough so that it is no longer hitting the garage door. If it still sags slightly, this is fine. A little sag is better than being too tight as you definitely don’t want to put the chain at risk of breaking.

If you have a loose drive chain, but aren’t sure you want to risk tightening it yourself, contact us today. We can help get that chain back to normal as well as solve all your other garage door woes.

Sometimes you may hear a strange clunking sound when the garage door moves. This indicates that the door’s chain has gone loose. The weakened chain begins to sag and slams against the rail when you open or close the door.

Because of the slack chain, the load on the garage door opener increases. As a result, the opener works less efficiently. In some cases, the garage door may jump off the track.

Follow these steps to tighten the chain:

Step 1

Prepare your garage door:

  • Close the garage door.
  • Cut the power.
  • Disconnect your garage door from the opener.

Step 2

Climb up a ladder and find a bolt on the trolley assembly. A divider separates two nuts on the threaded fastener. One of them is used for locking and the other one for adjusting. The locking nut is the one closer to the opener.

Step 3

Use a half-inch wrench to loosen the locking nut slightly. Then, tighten the adjusting nut. This way, you increase the tension of the chain. Now tighten the locking nut.

After completing all the steps, turn the power back on and connect the garage door to the opener. Open and close the garage door several times, to test the adjustments. And if you still hear clunking, try adjusting the chain again.

How tight should Chamberlain garage door chain be?

The chain should be tightened until it sits, at its midpoint, about a quarter-inch above the rail for a square rail and a half-inch above the rail for a T-rail. It's important that you don't over-tighten it, as this will cause the chain rollers to wear out prematurely.
