Does your deodorant stick have gel inside that comes out through little slots on the top? This kind of deodorant will be considered a liquid by TSA.

On the other hand, maybe your deodorant stick is solid and dry. You’re in luck, this type of roll on deodorant will not be counted as a liquid.

Then there’s spray deodorant. If you use deodorant that comes in an aerosol can, that will also be considered a liquid.

Any other kind of deodorant that uses liquid to do its thing, instead of a solid, will be counted as a liquid. Switching to a solid form will make packing for a trip a little easier.

Can you take deodorant on a plane in carry on luggage?

What does all this mean? Well, any liquids you pack in your carry on bag must abide by the TSA liquids rule.

All liquids must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces (100ml) or smaller, and all containers must fit inside a clear 1 quart (1 liter) zip top bag. You’re allowed to have one liquids bag per passenger.

This will impact your ability to travel with deodorant that’s considered a liquid or aerosol.

If you use solid deodorant, you can take it on a plane in your carry on luggage without issues. It does not need to go in your liquids bag, though you might want to put it in a toiletry bag of some type in case the top comes off while traveling.

I also suggest not packing solid roll on deodorant in your liquids bag since it’ll take up so much precious space. You’ll that space for things like toothpaste.

Can I bring deodorant on a plane in checked luggage?

The rules are a little easier for packing things in checked luggage. Your deodorant, no matter which type you use, can be packed in your checked luggage.

However, there are some rules about the amount of aerosols you can pack in checked bags.

Here’s what TSA says:

“Toiletry-type aerosols in checked baggage must not exceed 70 oz. (68 fl. oz) total and each container must be 18 oz. (16 fl. oz.) or less.”

So your aerosol deodorant is probably fine. You only need to worry about this if you’re traveling with several items that come in aerosol cans.

The other thing to keep in mind when bringing aerosols in checked baggage is how you pack it. Make sure the aerosol can has a cap and can’t accidentally start spraying.

It’s also a good idea to pack the can inside some kind of bag in case it leaks at all. You probably don’t want spray deodorant all over your clothes.
