I admit, I'm a complete sucker for musicals. I know it's totally unrealistic for people to burst into song, and that it can easily jar someone out of the story if they're not used to it, but a well-written musical is just fun in my opinion even if (or especially if) it's cheesy and goofy. "Mama Mia," "Bye Bye Birdie," "Hairspray," "Oliver!," Rogers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella," "Wicked," "Into the Woods," most of Disney's animated-musical output... they're a blast. Yes, you do get a few stinkers in the mix (such as the infamous "Carrie" and "Love Never Dies"), but that's true with any genre.

Although "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" is a rather... creative adaptation of the original biblical story of Joseph's coat of many colors, I find I can't nitpick the differences because it's just too much fun to watch. The fact that a good cast of actors and singers brings it to life certainly helps.

The story is familiar to anyone who's read the Bible or attended Sunday School -- Joseph is the favorite son of his father, who dotes on him to the dismay and anger of his eleven other sons. Finally upset enough to act, the brothers gang up on Joseph and sell him into slavery in Egypt. But Joseph, a dreamer gifted with visions of the future, manages to work his way upward in a classic rags-to-riches story, and ends up going from slave to prisoner to a noble second only to the Pharaoh himself. The story is told in a unique format, however -- as a stage play being put on for a parochial school, with a quirky teacher serving as narrator and the children in the audience joining in as the chorus at appropriate times. And though the original story was fairly serious, here it's not played seriously at all, and is acted out with great bombast, drama, and color.

I've left a review before regarding the music of this musical (under the

Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1992 Canadian Cast) ), but it's worth mentioning here as well. Virtually the entire story is told in song format, and though the lyric choices are occasionally odd or sound forced, there are some clever turns of phrase and it stays surprisingly true to the Biblical story despite the wackiness and camp factor. Most of the songs are quite catchy and lively, and they cover a wide range of styles from country to disco to calypso to rock. And there are some truly beautiful and thoughtful numbers as well, such as "Any Dream Will Do" and "Close Every Door To Me."

The acting in this film... well, let's just say that nobody involved in this film takes it seriously. Everyone, from Donny Osmond as Joseph to the backup dancers serving as wives and servants, gleefully chews the Technicolor scenery in this film, hamming it up for the camera and belting out their lines with gusto. Richard Attenborough as Joseph's father and Joan Collins as Potiphar's wife were a bit of a surprise to see, but they seem to be having quite a bit of fun in this as well, and Collins in particular is delightfully slinky and sinister as the ice-cold seductress. The brothers range from okay to hilariously great -- some, like Asher and Judah, are quite memorable, while others are quickly forgotten after the film is over. The narrator has to be my favorite character -- she steals every scene she's in, somehow managing to insert herself into the action of the story on a regular basis and serving as a sort of bridge between the audience and what's happening on stage.

And since I mentioned the scenery in the last paragraph... lets just say this movie looks nothing like ancient Egypt or Canaan. At times the sets look like theme-park versions of Biblical times, while at other times they're psychedelic in design and color. But given the overall tone of this musical, this wasn't particularly jarring. If anything, it just added to the over-the-top camp of the whole experience.

Perhaps the greatest strength of this musical, especially this production of it, is that it doesn't take itself seriously. It's not perfect -- some of the lyrics are cringe-inducingly forced, the costumes are weird and in some cases shockingly skimpy, and it's rather obvious a few of the actors can't sing (the butler and baker are the biggest offenders here). But it's still incredibly fun and catchy, and it looks like everyone involved had a blast making it.

Definitely worth your time if you're a fan of musicals in general (and Andrew Lloyd Webber in particular), though if you're looking for a serious biblical epic you're better off looking elsewhere. Probably best for ages 10 and up, due to the aforementioned costumes and some implied sensuality.

Very entertaining take on the biblical story of Joseph and his multicolored coat.

I love this musical. They stay to the basic story in the bible but tell it in a lighter way that actually sticks to the true meaning. The songs can't help but stick in your memory.

It's hard to rate this production but it is a lot easier to rate the Bluray (which is probably the same of the CD version). There is so much wrong and so much O.K. Let's start with the production or performance. Danny Osmond gets an 8.7/10 points the rest of the crew 8/10. The acting and the singing overall gets an 8/10 as a package. I did not see the original Brittish production with Joseph as a Brittish singer in its entirety but I've seen some of his performance and singing in other videos and I set that as the measuring standard and as a 10/10. Now for the production itself. It is so amateurish that it seems that it was produced at a small city college or plush high school. I mean the sofistication of the sets, customs, special effects. So if you compare this to other classical productions such as Oklahoma,Cats,The Phantom of the Opera,My Fair Lady, or whatever it is an insult to the viewer when you consider this is a production for making money not charity. Why couldn't the the producer make more Middle Eastern music fun rather than to choose western style music and wearing western boots while dancing. TRADITION THIS IS NOT!! AAYWEY! Does the music work? yes, kind of. Is it fun, yes kind of. Is the story meaningful in the play? No, absolutely NOT. This is a Biblical story and as such it has meaning and a teaching lesson. I doubt anybody that is not familiar with the Biblical story could tell you anything about its meaning from the play (the blu-ray production) As an adaptation from a Biblical point of view it gets a FAT Zero and visually it's blasphemous.
Let's turn to the blu-ray (and probably the dvd) quality itself. It lacks the vibrancy and sharpness of a blu-ray. The mastering is not up to par. I give the quality of video a 7. The audio quality I give it a generous 2. Why a 2? Because the level of audio between the low audio to the high audio is an assault on the viewer or listeners. It is about time people regard this kind of audio as trash. We have been living with audio mastering through VHS,DVD,and now Blu-Ray. Eversince DVD came out the normalization between the soft and loud audio has practically disappear from the lexicon and practice of Hollywood technicians creating for the listener not just a nuisance but more like an auditory abuse. Hollywood needs to start firing audi technicians that produce this type of audio quality in a paid product and unless people don't complaint systematically you will get this type of trash. My audio review is not just this Blu-ray but many Blu-rays and many DVDs being made and sold also. I's curious that movies made in the 1940's,1950's, and 1960's have proper and pleasant audio even when transferred to Blu-Ray or DVD. So the blame lies squarely in the Hollywood audio formatting that is simply trash. Would I recommend this Blu-Ray or DVD to others? In summary, NO!. Here are my points:

Overall performance = 8
Danny Osmond performance = 8.7
Production value = 0
Story value = 0
Video quality = 7 ,not consistent with the expectancy of Blu-Ray
Audio quality = 2 generous. highs are too high, lows are too low, overall trash for today's technology
Fun value = 7.5
Do I recommend purchase = NO, spend your money on other favorite movies or plays
Do I recommend seller = Yes, no problem

1.0 out of 5 stars Majorly dissapointed

What on earth have they done to the original sound track?! I used to listen to the original for hours as a kid - it was timeless and brilliant. This dvd of, I think, the Stage show in my very humble opinion is rubbish and not true to the original. I guess thatโ€™s Stage shows for you. Iโ€™m only 30mins in and canโ€™t wait to turn it off. The fact I donโ€™t like the main female performer that runs through the whole thing doesnโ€™t help. Also the sound editing is awful going from low to loud throughout. Iโ€™m really glad I havenโ€™t bought tickets for the Stage show as I was about to. I will listen to the original on sonos instead!

Just about the worst performance of this production that I have ever seen. The producer really needs to make up his mind as to whether he wants to be a "kids show" or a Las Vegas production. The Amazon reviewer even states that while this should be viewed as a kids show, "this production might warrant a little discretion due to one suggestive scene and some risque & cute costumes." "Risque" is not quite the word I would have used - they leave very little to the imagination. OK for adults but totally unnecessary for young kids.
Another irritation is the fact that subtitles are provided in French, German and Spanish but NOT in English. I see no point in that unless, for some reason, you want to listen in English while reading in another language.
I really wish I had not wasted my money on this garbage, I suppose that just means another donation to the local charity shop, they may get 50p for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Production

What a very good fast efficient service, DVD arrived within 2 days of order being placed.
It was not what I was expecting, as it was a production of Joseph set in a School, but it was one of the best productions I have seen as it included Donny Osmond, Richard Attenborough, Joan Collins and other stars. It reminded me of the Schools Productions, which brought back many fond memories both watching and taking part. I'm glad I made an error and obtained this production. Very Very pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming musical with Amazing lyrics by Tim Rice!

Reviewed in the United Kingdom ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง on January 3, 2011

I had always thought that "dreamcoat" was a sappy children's work more suited to schools then the West End or Broadway. So it was deep suspicion that I started watching this musical. But I simply adored it. I think the music is up there with Lloyd Webbers best music. I particularly like the brilliant use of the childrens chorus which never sings alone but accompanies the adult singers. But best of all is Tim Rice's amazing lyrics. A respected journalist said he was the greatest lyric writer since Gilbert of Gilbert and Sullivan. And I agree. The lyrics are very cleaver, witting, charming and like nothing you heard before!

The musical is very succesfully transferred to film by making it a school play in which the teachers perform for the young students. The young students become the children's chorus. But it quickly becomes a colourfull and sureal visual experience. Some great dancing and singing. It is high energy stuff. The numbers are variations on a particular musical genre such as calypso, rock and roll, charleston and even country and western!!

A fine performance by Donny Osmond but but it is Maria Freidman who is the star. She dazzles us with her charm, sassyness and great singing although her voice could be a bit stronger!

Strongly recommended for any musical lover!

PS For those who still think this musical is for children I would like to point out that I am big fan of the operas of Richard Wagner. I know what serious adult music is all about!

5.0 out of 5 stars My step daughter is pleased

Reviewed in the United Kingdom ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง on July 4, 2013

My 7 year old step daughter is performing this play with her school in a few weeks so I bought this DVD so she could watch and learn the story. I must admit I have never seen Joseph or wanted to. However I have been forced to sit and watch it over and over for the past 2 weeks and to be honest...I LOVE IT!!!!

Donny Osmond plays a cracking role and his voice is really good. I'm an 80s kid and would have preferred to have seen good ol Jason Donovan playing the role but unfortunately I could not find that version.

To that end I have to give this DVD a 5 out of 5 as it has made my step daughter happy and kept her entertained for weeks and has inspired her to put everything into her part in the play at school. And for me, it is just a fun play to watch. Especially the Joan Collins part "phwoooooaaaarrrrr" lol.

Who was the narrator in Joseph with Donny Osmond?

Filmed on the famed 007 Stage at Pinewood Studios in 1999, the production stars former teen idol Donny Osmond in the title role, along with Maria Friedman as the Narrator, Joan Collins as Mrs Potiphar, and Richard Attenborough as Jacob.

Who played the narrator in Joseph and the Amazing?

Principal casts.

Is Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat biblically accurate?

And Joseph himself is an important figure in several of the world's major religions; his story is familiar to many people across the globe. So what is the real story of Joseph? Well, in truth, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical does a pretty good job of telling the story accurately, at least according to scripture.

What age is Joseph the musical for?

Joseph the Musical is recommended for ages 6 and above.
