Merrell mens forestbound mid waterproof hiking boots

An all-leather, mid-cut budget hiking boots the Merrell Forestbound Mid Waterproofs are designed to prioritize comfort and protection. This is achieved thanks to their quality leather uppers, a waterproof liner plus plenty of ankle padding and generous underfoot cushioning. The midsole features a moulded nylon arch shank embedded in an EVA foam midsole for stability and flex. At under 500g in a men’s size nine, they’re lightweight for a leather boot too, which ought to further alleviate foot fatigue during long hikes (see also Hiking injuries and ailments: how to avoid and treat them).

The fit is fairly neutral, neither narrow nor broad, though it certainly didn’t seem to be as wide as some other Merrell footwear we’ve tested. It’s a fit that should suit a wide range of people, though – as ever – always try before you buy if you can (for more on what to consider, see How to choose a pair of hiking boots).

This is a robust-looking boot, with upper metal lace hooks and minimal stitching. This generally means fewer potential failure points, though we did wonder about the placement of the forefoot seam, which runs across the inner section of the boot right at the point where the boot flexes, at the base of the toes. This might be a potential weak point. It’s the only negative in terms of construction however, as otherwise the boot is well-finished.

Merrell Forestbound Mid: on the trails

Unsurprisingly given their affordable price tag, these boots make use of Merrell’s own in-house waterproof membrane and rubber sole compound. The former doesn’t always seem to have the best reputation, and some buyers have commented that their boots have leaked, but we didn’t experience any issues on test.

The brand’s outsole impressed us too, offering dependable grip, with its chunky 5mm lugs biting in well, particularly on softer terrain. The angled grooves on the outer edge of the sole also seem to shed mud fairly well.

We particularly liked the protective toecap and heel counter, which prevent the leather from picking up too many scuffs and scrapes, while warding off trail debris.

Overall, we reckon these would be great boots for countryside rambles, long forest walks and the odd hill day. It’s fairly unusual to find a full-grain leather boot at this price point too, particularly one that is so light and comfortable, all of which makes the Merrell Forestbound Mid WP an excellent value proposition.

The Merrell Forestbound Mid WP is built to give you comfort, support, and protection in your longest hikes. It is a solid option if you:

  • Prefer a hiking boot that is designed for wet and dry conditions.
  • Prefer a hiking boot that is highly slip-resistant and offers stability on mixed terrain.

Merrell Forestbound Mid WP notable features

  • This boot has a PU-coated leather upper with mesh lining that protects against the elements.
  • Designed for wet and dry conditions, this hiker is lined with the M. Select Dry membrane that seals out moisture.
  • It comes with a durable M. Select Grip rubber outsole that is highly slip-resistant and offers stability on mixed terrain. In addition, the angled lugs channel excess water away from the underfoot while the razor siping increases surface traction.
  • The EVA midsole and Kinetic Base insole create a cushiony and supportive platform for the foot.

Size and fit

This mid-top hiker from Merrell has sizes available for men and women. It has a leather upper that is pliable enough to conform to the shape of the foot after some breaking in. Furthermore, the traditional lace-up closure features two additional hooks on top for a more secure fit.

Excellent grip on wet and dry surfaces

The Forestbound mid-top waterproof hiker has the M. Select Grip sole featuring diamond-shaped lugs on the forefoot and heel area. These lugs are 5mm deep, which is ideal for challenging terrain. Whether you are stepping on wet or dry surfaces, steep slopes, rocky ground, muddy trails, or loose dirt, such a lug depth is good enough to get a solid grip and traction.

Effective water dispersal system

This outsole also has thin-cut lines (created through razor siping) that enhance the shoe traction on wet areas. Furthermore, the lugs are highly angled, creating an effective water dispersal system.

Excellent stability

Like most other Merrell shoes, this model features a midsole made of EVA - a lightweight and flexible foam that does a great job of absorbing shock or impact. EVA midsoles also have a high bounce rate, which helps with the stability of the foot when walking, running, or going uphill.

Excellent support and comfort

For added support and comfort, this boot comes with a removable insole that is contoured to the shape of the foot.

Excellent arch support

This shoe has several other features necessary to survive long hikes. For instance, it is equipped with a molded nylon arch shank that absorbs up to four times a person’s weight, thereby reducing the risk of fatigue when hiking or walking long distances.

Durable and abrasion-resistant

The Forestbound Mid WP has a leather upper treated with polyurethane (PU) to increase its durability, water repellency, and abrasion resistance.

Provides protection from trail hazards

Lastly, this boot comes with a die-cut rubber rand and toe cap for superior protection against varying trail hazards.
