This past weekend, hundreds of students from all over the state competed in Columbia at the MSHSAA State Solo and Ensemble Music Festival. Students have been preparing for their performances whenever and wherever they can. “I used Wildcat hour to practice with my ensemble. We also had a few class periods to rehearse as well as performing in front of our class,” junior Allie Erickson said. ”On the bus ride to Mizzou, I ran through my songs in my head and then when we arrived my ensemble and I warmed our voices up and ran through our songs,” Erickson added. After going through the vetting process of “mini-districts” and MSHSAA District Solo and Ensemble Music Festival, students with a 1-rating get to move on and compete at State. “We [ensemble members] wanted a better chance to reach this goal of moving on to State. We are all really passionate about music and wanted to get a gold rating at State (which we did) and I am so proud of us,” sophomore Taylor Meng said. The scoring system changed slightly this year between Districts and State, moving from a 1-5 ranking system to a gold through silver ranking system. “The rating system change sort of threw some people off but it basically got rid of the last two ratings and added them in so it was more of three rank system,” Meng said. Solo and Ensemble Festival is a way for students to showcase their abilities and talents. “Personally I had a rough go, but it is a good opportunity to get a feel for performing solos competitively and it was an honor to even make it to State,” junior Nikki Jensen said. Although not everyone gets the rating they might have intended, State is still a great opportunity for all musicians. “It gives people a chance to showcase their voices, many who don’t usually get to; it gives everyone an equal opportunity to see how they compare to others in a friendly, uplifting way,” Erickson said. Many students at BSHS received superior (Gold) ratings and those who did not are still recognized for their ability to make it to State. Orchestra state ratings:
