Can you use canned yams instead of sweet potato?

The short answer is no, you can't always substitute yams for sweet potatoes. That's because yams and sweet potatoes are different vegetables with totally different origins, even though they often get lumped together in the same category in the United States.

Can I substitute canned sweet potatoes for fresh sweet potatoes?

Canned or frozen sweet potatoes may be substituted for the fresh form in any recipe calling for cooked sweet potatoes as the starting point. Canned sweet potatoes are generally smaller in diameter because of their better canning qualities.

What is the difference between sweet potato casserole and yams?

That sweet, orange-colored root vegetable that you love so dearly is actually a sweetpotato. Yes, all so-called “yams” are in fact sweetpotatoes. Most people think that long, red-skinned sweetpotatoes are yams, but they really are just one of many varieties of sweetpotatoes. So where did all of the confusion come from?

Are Bruce's yams actually sweet potatoes?

Bruce's Yams Cut Sweet Potatoes in Syrup are carefully made from only the most tender part of the sweet potato called the sweetheart. For easy preparation that delivers goodness on the fly, simply heat and eat these canned vegetables.
