The helicopter ride to the boat dock over the mountains and glacier, then landing on the dock with those amazing views. Then the airboat ride around the glacier was breathtaking, we got right up to the glacier, but also the scenery was incredible. Then we got back into the helicopter for another amazing scenic ride to the glacier. Walked around on it and rode back. The crew gave a great guided tour on both the boat and helicopter. I've already told my friends who are going on the same cruise to book this when they go. I tried to book it initially through the cruise line and it was sold out. I ended up booking directly and got tickets and saved 50$ When I booked two rides over the cruise line price. I highly recommend booking through them and not your cruise line. Aug 2022 - Joyce C. This was the most exhilarating excursion I have ever taken! According to our airboat guide it was a rare time to see the beautiful blue ice that had just fallen off the glacier that morning! Is the Taku Glacier melting?Since 2013, the glacier has lost mass, thinning at an average rate of 1.3 meters per year, and it has retreated from its moraine (Figure 3), with record annual mass loss in 2019.
Is the Taku Glacier advancing?The Taku is a tidewater glacier that formerly calved, but is now advancing slowly over its outwash delta. The glacier had a dominantly positive mass balance from 1946-1988 and a slightly negative balance since 1988.
Is the Taku Glacier shrinking?In a new pair of satellite photos shared by NASA's Earth Observatory, the slow decline of Taku Glacier has finally become apparent. Taken in August 2014 and August 2018, the photos show the icy platforms where the glacier meets the river retreating for the first time since scientists began studying Taku, in 1946.
Why is the Taku Glacier advancing?Until 1948 the glacier had a calving front; since then the terminus has been grounded. Due to the positive mass balance and the fact that it was no longer losing mass to icebergs, Taku Glacier has become insensitive to the warming that has impacted all other glaciers of the icefield. This has driven its advance.
