Julia Quinn again adds history by telling us about the date which is April 1814, during which the whole thing is taking place. Anthony Bridgerton is the bachelor under discussion in this novel and he surely is a naughty fellow. Trapping one woman and then the other in the society is the usual routine of Anthony. He is the kind of man who always remains in the gossip columns of the city’s newspapers. Most of the people now read about his scandals as a routine thing but for the women, it is something that ignites a spark in their hearts. Another scandal comes to the scene when the novel properly starts but this time Anthony thinks that he is serious about the woman he is in relation with. Both have agreed to marry but there is one power that is standing between them and that is the elder sister of the woman Anthony wants to marry.  Kate does not want her younger sister to marry a man who is known for his scandals with the various women of the town. The more he tries to convince Kate the more she becomes aggressive in her stance. And then slowly Anthony thinks that he is getting attracted towards Kate instead of her sister. Rosalyn Landor gives the fragrance of feeling through narration in the middle of the story. Kate also starts developing a feeling for Anthony which we observed in the ladies during The Duke and I and An Offer from a Gentleman. His first kiss makes Kate totally mad and Anthony too starts having dreams about Kate which is a total shocker for him. The Viscount Who Loved Me was an enjoyable read with both hilarious and touching moments. There was much of Julia Quinn’s customary humorous bantering, however I must confess that the tale was a little conversation heavy at times. This, in my opinion, gave it a frantic atmosphere that was at times exhausting to read. Some of the scenarios were extremely amusing and provided some excellent laughs. Two that come to mind are Kate’s overweight corgi leading them on a merry chase through the park and the Bridgerton siblings’ ultra-competitive game of Pall Mall. While the hero and heroine in this story aren’t as damaged as some of the other romantic characters I’ve read, they do both have problems to overcome, which lead to some momentary angst. I particularly appreciated Anthony and Kate’s support for one another in the face of adversity, since it demonstrated how much they cared for one another. When Anthony’s father died when he was only eighteen, he had to grow up far too quickly, take up his title, and become the family’s man. As a result, Anthony has a distorted perception of his own mortality. Regardless of how crazy it may appear, he is convinced that he, too, will die young. He lives in the moment to some extent, enjoying pleasure wherever he can, and has developed a reputation as an unrepentant rake as a result. Anthony, on the other hand, has decided that it’s time to settle down with a wife and start a family by generating an heir. He selects a woman who satisfies certain criteria but with whom he believes he will have little possibility of falling in love. He knows love exists because his parents had a beautiful marriage, but he believes it will simply add to his inevitable death. He relentlessly pursues the current toast of the ton, but his heart is attracted irresistibly to her Plain Jane sister, in his search for a loveless union. Although Anthony does act like a jerk toward Kate in one episode, he at least has the decency to feel bad about it and apologize later. Otherwise, he was a decent guy who adored his family and tried to do the right thing, as Kate gradually discovered. I really appreciated the sequences in which he assists Kate in overcoming her fear of storms. Kate has deep links to her own family. Despite the fact that her parents are no longer alive, she still has her stepmother, who has been a mother to her in every manner, and a half-sister whom she adores. Kate and Edwina’s sisterly banter was entertaining. When Kate learns that the shady Anthony has his sights set on Edwina, she resolves to do everything she can to keep him from coming near her, let alone marrying her. For the first part of the book, this resulted in a lot of disputes with Anthony. This, I thought, diminished their moments of attraction and passion, giving the impression that they were always going two steps forward and one step back. Even though Kate adores her sister, she can’t help but feel insecure around her while she’s around. Kate is a shrinking violet in comparison to Edwina’s exceptional beauty, which has caused her self-esteem problems. She wants Anthony would notice her as she comes to recognize him for the guy he truly is, not realizing that he has already done so. Then she has to face her crippling fear of thunderstorms, but I believe that having to cope with her own concerns has made her more understanding of, and sympathetic to, Anthony’s fears when he finally confesses. A Bridgerton tale isn’t complete without a slew of Bridgerton siblings. Even though they didn’t have any dialogue, I believe all seven of them made an appearance in some fashion. Colin’s (Romancing Mr. Bridgerton) devil-may-care attitude is one of my favorites. He always manages to make me smile. Benedict, the hero of the following novel in the series, An Offer from a Gentleman, made a couple of appearances as well, while Eloise (To Sir Phillip, With Love) got to play the caring and mildly meddling younger sister. I appreciated meeting Simon and Daphne (The Duke and I) and learning that they are expecting a child shortly. Edwina, Kate’s sister, was one of my favorites. I think she would have made a fascinating heroine of her own novel, given her intellectual personality and desire for a scholarly husband, but since she gets her special someone in this book, I doubt we’ll ever see that happen. I can’t deny that Julia Quinn is a competent writer, but while I’ve loved some aspects of her books, I can’t say that the two I’ve read so far have captivated and wowed me in the same way that they have other romance fans. Perhaps it was because The Viscount Who Loved Me began with a love/hate relationship (not my fave), which created some mental distance between the hero and heroine. Perhaps it was because the plot was lighter in tone, so when the anxiety did emerge, it didn’t have the same gravity as it would have if the novel had been more serious in tone. Perhaps it was because Anthony and Kate seemed to solve their difficulties, which had troubled them for years, far too quickly. This is one of those few occasions when I couldn’t pinpoint exactly what was wrong, but whatever the cause, The Viscount Who Loved Me felt to be missing that little something for me that would have elevated it to brilliance. Despite the fact that it was a little boring at times, it was an enjoyable enough read to make me want to continue with the series and read the second epilogue. 1814 promises to be another eventful season, but not, This Author believes, for Anthony Bridgerton, London’s most elusive bachelor, who has shown no indication that he plans to marry.
