49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans has his crew playing some of the best defense in the NFL in 2022. The under in the 49ers’ games has hit four out of five times. They lead the league in yards allowed per game at 249.2 and are tied for points allowed per game at 12.2. The Falcons have been surprising this season, playing with heart and pushing every opponent to their limits. Had it not been for an egregious roughing the passer penalty in favor of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Falcons could’ve had a chance to take down their divisional rival. Falcons QB Marcus Mariota has played well, but the 49ers’ suffocating defensive front could be too much for Atlanta. New England Patriots (2-3) at Cleveland Browns (2-3)
Bill Belichick prepares for a date with his former franchise when the New England Patriots take on the Cleveland Browns. Both of these franchises are instilling remarkably similar philosophies when it comes to game plans. Give the running back the ball, and ask your quarterback to do as little as possible. It’s kept both teams afloat, but who has the advantage in this game? MORE: NFL Insider Notebook 6.0 The Patriots’ starting RB, Damien Harris, has been ailing from a hamstring injury all week. While many thought he would miss multiple weeks, he has progressed to be a game-time decision. He’s not expected to play, and while Rhamondre Stevenson will fill in, the Browns have both of their backs at their disposal. Add in the Patriots likely seeing rookie Bailey Zappe make his second start, and New England is facing an uphill battle to get to 3-3. New York Jets (3-2) at Green Bay Packers (3-2)
Can the state of New York take down Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers in back-to-back weeks? That’s the question the Jets have been asked to answer after the Giants’ surprising win across the pond in Week 5. Rodgers is still building chemistry with his new receiving room, but the early connection between him and rookie Romeo Doubs is promising. The Jets head into this game after dropping 40 on an extremely hampered Miami Dolphins squad. While New York likely won’t rattle off a performance like that again, they will give the Packers a run for their money. QB Zach Wilson is also starting to connect with his weapons, and the RB duo of Breece Hall and Michael Carter is producing. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3) at Indianapolis Colts (2-2-1)
Since the 2017 season, the Jaguars are 7-4 against the Colts in this AFC South showdown. The two franchises split games last season, but the Week 18 collapse by the Colts will not be forgotten for quite some time. Now, after being blanked by the Jaguars in Week 2, can the Colts stop their skid against Jacksonville at two games? It’s going to be quite a challenge. Despite being in Indianapolis, the Colts will be without Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines in the backfield. Now being forced to their third and fourth options, the chances at winning don’t look great when asking a 37-year-old Matt Ryan to put the team on his back. Minnesota Vikings (4-1) at Miami Dolphins (3-2)
All the talk in Miami over the past week has surrounded the current QB situation. Both Teddy Bridgewater and Tua Tagovailoa have cleared the concussion protocol. Miami plans to give Tua one more week of rest, giving rookie seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson the start against the Vikings. Bridgewater will serve as Thompson’s backup after the former barely had the chance to practice this week while working his way through the concussion protocol. Luckily for the Dolphins, CB Xavien Howard is full-go after missing last week’s game against the Jets. He’ll need to be ready to go from the jump, as he’ll likely spend much of the day shadowing Minnesota WR Justin Jefferson. Cincinnati Bengals (2-3) at New Orleans Saints (2-3)
The New Orleans Saints are hurting right now. While they received the best offensive performance of 2022 under the direction of Andy Dalton, his list of weapons in Week 6 is short. WRs Michael Thomas, Jarvis Landry, and Deonte Harty are all out, along with CB Marshon Lattimore. Jameis Winston will sit for a third week, allowing Dalton to start against the franchise that drafted him for the third year in a row. Meanwhile, the Bengals come in after falling just short in Week 5 to the leg of Justin Tucker. Baltimore’s defense made Ja’Marr Chase invisible for most of the night last week, a departure from matchups last season. Given the Saints’ tendency to play more man defense and Lattimore’s absence, Chase should find plenty of spaces to get the ball. Baltimore Ravens (3-2) at New York Giants (4-1)
The Ravens head to MetLife Stadium where the New York Giants are on cloud nine at the moment. Not many had this team penned to be 4-1 when Week 6 rolled around in 2022, but here we are. Head coach Brian Daboll returning some competency to the coaching staff has helped the Giants win closer games. However, it is essential to note that despite a 4-1 record, the Giants have a point differential of just +10. Meanwhile, the Ravens got their first home win of the season after two awful second-half collapses in previous weeks. The Ravens have much more talent across the board, and a loss here would start to set off sirens for Baltimore. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2) at Pittsburgh Steelers (1-4)
The first start of the Kenny Pickett era was one to forget, as Pittsburgh was demolished 38-3 at the hands of the Buffalo Bills. There aren’t many feasible scenarios in which one would think the Steelers could pull off the upset against the Buccaneers. Outside of Julio Jones, Tampa Bay QB Tom Brady has all his weapons available. WR Chris Godwin is finding his footing after returning from injury, and Leonard Fournette’s contributions in the passing game have been invaluable. It’d be a surprise if the Buccaneers don’t take advantage of a weak opponent and move to 4-2. Carolina Panthers (1-4) at Los Angeles Rams (2-3)
Matt Rhule is out as head coach of the Carolina Panthers. The 1-4 start to the season was too much for owner David Tepper to stomach, and now, Steve Wilks takes over duties in the interim. Not only will we see a new head coach, but Baker Mayfield is also currently doubtful with an ankle injury, forcing PJ Walker to make his first start of the season. Meanwhile, the Rams have struggled this season to maintain any momentum from their Super Bowl win. Matthew Stafford does not look right, and the rushing attack is next to nonexistent. Luckily for Los Angeles, the Panthers’ offense is just as underwhelming. With a large swath of players involved in trade rumors, who knows what we see from a preoccupied Carolina squad? Arizona Cardinals (2-3) at Seattle Seahawks (2-3)
This NFC West showdown sees the Cardinals playing bird bowls in back-to-back weeks. After falling to the Eagles 20-17 in Week 5, Arizona goes head-to-head against the Seahawks. This is the last week Arizona plays without All-Pro WR DeAndre Hopkins as he completes his six-game suspension. They couldn’t ask for a better time for his return, as the offense continues to struggle. WR Marquise Brown has gelled very well with QB Kyler Murray, but that hasn’t resulted in enough points. Meanwhile, Geno Smith has been the season’s surprise, grasping the Seahawks’ starting QB job and running with it. At this point, it is somewhat funny there was any “controversy” between Smith and Drew Lock this offseason. A win for Seattle this week would start to change the narrative on the trajectory of this season. Seattle has a favorable schedule down the stretch. Could the Seahawks end up making a playoff push? Buffalo Bills (3-2) at Kansas City Chiefs (4-1)
The game of the week, if not the entire season, sees the Buffalo Bills head to Arrowhead Stadium to take on the Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen are the faces of the league right now as they continue to be the anchors of the new era of QBs. Buffalo is firing on all cylinders in every facet of the game. The defense averages just 12.2 points allowed per game, and the offense is second in the league, scoring 30.4 points per game. The only team scoring more than the Bills is Kansas City (31.8 points per game). This will be a thrilling game with both Mahomes and Allen dazzling, but will the dominance of Buffalo’s defense be the difference? Dallas Cowboys (4-1) at Philadelphia Eagles (5-0)
QB Jalen Hurts has led the charge in Philadelphia’s undefeated start, throwing four touchdowns and rushing for an additional six. The additions to the WR room have paid off, and a healthy offensive line has helped Hurts thrive. On the other hand, the Cowboys have thoroughly enjoyed Cooper Rush doing everything he can to keep things alive in Dak Prescott’s absence. The Cowboys’ MVP over the last four weeks has been the team’s stifling defense, but the offense has found ways to help their elite counterpart out.
