Where is the transmission dipstick on a 2005 chevy equinox

Hi chasjernigan, Welcome to 2carpros

TRANS-AXLE FLUID REPLACEMENT

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

Raise and support the vehicle.

Remove the drain plug and drain fluid. Allow at least five minutes for the fluid to drain completely.

Remove the gasket from the drain plug and discard.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE:

Install the new gasket on the drain plug.
NOTICE: Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Notice in Cautions and Notices.

Install the drain plug.
TIGHTEN
Drain plug to 40 Nm (30 lb ft)

Make sure vehicle is level.
IMPORTANT: Dexron III automatic transmission fluid is not compatible with this trans-axle. If Dexron III ATF is used, trans-axle failure will result. This trans-axle uses GM T-IV fluid P/N 88900925.

Remove the fluid level indicator located behind the front trans-axle mount.

NOTICE: Do not remove the third gear anchor band bolt located on top of the transmission for checking fluid or adding fluid. Removing the bolt will dislocate internal components and require the transmission to be removed from the vehicle and disassembled for repair.

Add approximately 3.1L (3.3 quart) of GM T-IV fluid to the trans-axle, using the fluid level indicator location.

IMPORTANT: If the check is necessary at a low oil temperature of 30 -40 C (86 -104 F), perform check using the "COLD" range on the level gauge. However, the fluid must be re-checked at the proper fluid temperature.

Start engine and operate vehicle until trans-axle fluid temperature reaches 60 -70 C (140 -158 F).

Apply parking brake.
Depress brake pedal and move shift lever slowly through all gear ranges from park (P) to low (liter), pausing for about three seconds in each range. Return shift lever to park (P) range at idle condition.
Pull level gauge out again and check if fluid level is within the "HOT" range.
If fluid is not within the correct level, adjust accordingly:
If fluid is below the "HOT" range, add enough to bring it up to the correct level.
If fluid is above "HOT" range, drain excess fluid.
Install the fluid level indicator.

Cheers!

You cannot check or add fluid as described there is no dipstick that you can just grab and check fluid! You have to get under the car and remove an engine mount to get to the dipstick which bolted in with 12mm bolt ! It is a poorly designed transmission with no fill tube for easy access. $250-$400 for transmission service!

You have to remove 3-4 bolts off of the cover underneath the car. You cannot access your dipstick without removing that cover and will have to have it on a lift to get an accurate reading of the fluid level. Items you will need

  • Floor jack

  • 2 jack stands

  • Ratchet and metric sockets

  • Shop rags

  • New drain bolt gasket

  • Torque wrench

  • Clean transmission (long-neck) funnel

  • 5 quarts GM T-IV transmission fluid

Chevy recommends that you drain and fill the automatic transmission fluid every 50,000 miles in your 2005 Equinox. It's critical that you use GM T-IV -- or T-4 -- fluid. If you use anything else, such as Dexron III, transmission failure will result. When adding fluid, double-check that you're removing the correct bolt. Removing the wrong bolt will cause damage that's expensive to repair. The filter in this transmission is not replaceable.

Out With the Old

Locate the front jacking points. There is an arrow on the plastic lower body panel, to the rear of each front wheel opening. Position the floor jack under the jacking flange indicated by the arrow, and not under the plastic panel itself. Lift that side of the Equinox and place a jack stand under the frame lifting point 12 inches inboard from the jacking flange. Lower the vehicle onto the jack stand. Repeat for the other side.

Find the transmission drain bolt at the bottom of the transmission, near the bell housing. Place the drain pan underneath and remove the drain bolt with a ratchet and socket. Pull the gasket from the drain bolt and throw it away. Allow the fluid to drain for at least five minutes.

Clean the drain bolt and install a new gasket. Thread the bolt in by hand and tighten it to 29 foot-pounds with a torque wrench. Remove the drain pan and lower the Equinox to the ground.

In With the New

Find the fluid level indicator behind the front transaxle mount. It looks like a dipstick secured by a flange with a bolt through it. Be sure you're looking at the flange bolt, and not the anchor band bolt on top of the transmission. If you remove the anchor bolt it will cause damage you'll need to remove the transmission to repair.

Remove the flange bolt and the fluid level indicator. Use the long-neck funnel to add 4 quarts of T-IV fluid through the hole.

Start the engine and allow it to idle up to operating temperature. With your foot on the brake, move the shift lever from Park through every gear, pausing three or four seconds in each gear, and back to Park.

With the engine still running, use the level indicator as a dipstick to check the fluid level. If the fluid isn't within the "Hot" range, add fluid, a little at a time, to bring it into range. It should take about 4.25 quarts total. If you put too much in so it's above the "Hot" range, you'll have to drain the excess fluid, so be careful.

Turn the engine off. Replace the level indicator and tighten the flange bolt to 89 inch-pounds.

Dispose of the used fluid responsibly. Take it to a recycling center, service station or auto parts store for acceptance.

Where is the transmission oil dipstick located?

Locate automatic transmission fluid dipstick, typically near where the transmission or transaxle meets rear of the engine. It looks similar to the oil dipstick.

What transmission fluid goes in a 2005 Chevy Equinox?

Valvoline Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid Dexron VI 1 Quart.

Why is there no transmission dipstick?

If you have a late-model car, it may not have a dipstick for checking the transmission fluid. Not only does this make it difficult to check fluid level and condition, it also eliminates the dipstick tube or opening through that fluid is normally added to an automatic transmission.
