Historici zijn het nog altijd niet eens over het antwoord op de vraag waarom Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart La clemenza di Tito schreef. Hij moest zijn werk aan De toverfluit onderbreken en componeren volgens een schema dat we vandaag de dag voor onmogelijk houden. Mozart werd voor zijn inspanningen echter rijkelijk betaald en hij was er ongetwijfeld van overtuigd dat hij met een opera die bij de kroning van de Heilige Roomse Keizer Leopold II als koning van Bohemen werd opgevoerd zijn goede relatie met Praag (die al sinds het succes van Figaro’s bruiloft bestond) zou bestendigen.

De centrale boodschap van La clemenza dit Tito was voor de keizer van cruciaal belang: hij wilde laten zien dat hij als absolute vorst goedgeefs kon zijn, in een tijd waarin Europa in beroering was door de politieke aardschok van de Franse Revolutie.

Samen met Caterino Mazzolà blies Mozart nieuw leven in Pietro Metastasio’s libretto, een verhaal dat in de achttiende eeuw al meermaals op muziek was gezet. In het oude Rome heeft Tito met de afwijzing van Vitellia de kiem gelegd voor zijn eigen val. De vastbesloten Vitellia zoekt wraakt en weet Sextus (ondanks dat hij een vriend van Tito is) zover te krijgen dat hij hem wil vermoorden. Uiteindelijk besluit Tito Vitellia toch tot zijn keizerin te verkiezen, maar daarmee weet hij niet te verhinderen dat het capitool in brand wordt gestoken en de opstand uitbreekt.

La clemenza di Tito, een werk waarin Mozart op z’n best is, beleefde zijn première op 6 september 1791 in het Praagse Staatstheater en zal nu het publiek in de Weense Staatsopera betoveren. De opera bestaat uit een verbluffend muzikaal spel van licht en schaduw en bevat met een tot de grond toe afbrandend Rome bovendien een van de meest spannende taferelen in het genre.
