You can get an Amex instant card number after applying and getting approved for an American Express credit card. This feature is available for all Amex credit cards, but keep in mind that not all applicants may be eligible. In addition, to qualify, you must apply either online or over the phone at (888) 297-1244.

If you submit an online application, you will be able to retrieve your instant card number either immediately after approval or via a link provided in your email shortly after you are approved. If you apply over the phone, your instant card number will be sent to you via email.

What you should know about the Amex instant card numbers:

• You can get an Amex instant card number if you apply online or over the phone, but not if you apply by mail.
• Amex instant card numbers come with an expiration date and security code. This way, you can use your card before it arrives in the mail.
• According to Amex, whether you get an instant number depends on their ability to immediately verify your identity from the info provided on your application.
• If you receive an instant card number, you’ll be able to use it anywhere Amex is accepted.
• You will have access to the entire credit line with the instant card number, same as you would with your physical card.
• An Amex instant card number is possible with any American Express credit card.

So, you’re never guaranteed an Amex instant card number. But if you apply and make sure all your information is accurate, you have the best chance of getting one.

You can use your card even before it arrives and without knowing the full card number by creating an online account for the card and linking it to Apple Pay. Wherever Apple Pay is accepted, you can use the virtual card without having the real physical one

Being approved for a credit card is not the same as being able to use it. And instant approval is not instant access. Most cards are still mailed, in which case it will typically take seven to 10 days to get to you. If you want it sooner than that, many credit companies will expedite shipping (even overnight), but they usually charge for that service.

If you truly want to use the card during the same lunch hour in which you apply, you’ll need to choose a card that offers an instant credit card number—and, of course, most don’t. Besides the co-branded/store cards, only a small number of card issuers will give you an account number that you can use for online purchases right away, and which you can keep using until you receive your actual card. You can find online resources that identify creditors that offer instant credit access, or you can ask any credit card provider whether it offers that option.

In-store: If a merchant asks you to choose between "credit" and "debit," choose "credit." No PIN is required for in-store purchases. Depending on the type of terminal, you will either swipe the Card or insert it into the slot.  

Online: For online purchases, you'll be asked to enter your Card details during checkout, including your Card number, expiration date and 4-digit security code located on the front of your Card.

Amex Express Checkout: Eligible Card Members with an online account can make purchases through Amex Express Checkout with participating online merchants and in participating merchant apps by entering their americanexpress.com User ID and Password. Just look for the "Amex Express Checkout" button in the merchant's checkout experience.
