Plant Sale

Annual Plant Sale 2023

Mark your calendars!  The most anticipated plant sale in the area is scheduled for Saturday, May 6, 2023, from 9 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Garden club members will be working throughout the fall and winter months in their greenhouse at the Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Garden Museum to insure that shoppers have a wide selection of annuals and perennials for their home gardens.

The plant sale will be held at the Club’s greenhouse at the Museum, 396 County Street, New Bedford.  Proceeds from the plant sale benefit community projects through the Club’s Grants Program. Click here to learn more:  Grants

This is our annual fundraiser which provides the funds for our monthly educational programs, community contributions, charitable contributions, scholarships, town plantings, seasonal decorations and more.

Our very successful plant sales are the result of almost every garden club member contributing time, ideas, plants and many hours of hard work.

How We Get The Plants:
It is truly wonderful to see how so many people contribute plants. As members, we dig in other garden club members’ gardens, some non-garden club members’ gardens, as well as our own gardens.  We take parts of established perennials to help thin the plantings, and then pot them in a quality loam and compost mix for the sale.  We dig in the spring and the fall.  We offer an amazing selection of sun and shade perennials, ground covers, bushes and trees – something to please every gardener.   An inventory of plants will be posted prior to the sale and we encourage buyers to brings wagons or carts.

We also purchase annuals, hanging baskets and herbs at wholesale prices from local garden centers.

Since it’s always held on Mother’s Day weekend, we offer around 60 Mother’s Day Baskets, which usually sell very well to the children and Dads too.

Our success is due to so many people helping in so many ways from digging, potting, pricing, moving, and selling plants, as well as cashiering and helping customers at the sale.  It truly is an amazing event where every member finds a way to participate. It all adds up to one great sale and one very exciting day.

Our 2022 plant sale was another huge success.  Over 2,000 perennials, herbs, native plants, ground covers, bushes, trees and annuals were sold.

If you would like us to split up some of your perennials in the fall or spring, please contact us at [email protected].  We will come to your house and leave your garden in excellent condition.

I think we can all agree our gardens and our yards just couldn’t look worse – thanks to Uri – that unprecedented, week-long artic freeze that we all had the unfortunate luck to experience. The word from experienced gardeners is to be patient – time will tell what lived and what didn’t.  But for many of us here in the Garden Club, we will be looking to replant as soon as possible and our Spring Plant Sale can’t come soon enough!!

In addition to our beautiful caladiums, and thanks to our many gardening members - we will be offering colorful spring flowers and plants; annuals, perennials, succulents, specialty plants, sun plants, shade plants, hanging baskets, vegetables, fragrant herbs and charming garden items (that we’re calling “This &That”). Your plant donations are even more important this year – so thank you to all who are working hard and growing those plants!

Our annual Spring Plant Sale continues to evolve and grow.  This year our Plant Sale will have a festive-feel and will offer ample free parking, hourly featured attractions, give-aways every ½ hour, complimentary lemonade & iced tea and raffle prizes -- adding up to the whole event being family-friendly and fun for all!

Cher & JudiAnn are working hard on arranging great, interesting 30-Minute, Featured Speakers and Attractions!  Some of them are:

  • Home Composting Made Simple, by Kathy Saucier

  • Transforming Old Pots into Designer Planters, by Sandy Cackowski

  • Gardening for Kids, by James “Boone” Holladay (Fort Bend County Extension Office)

  • The Magic & Beauty of Fairy Gardens (Kathy Gilmore)
