(Image credit: Emma Christensen) Allow me to present the humble broccoli — beloved steamed side dish with lemon and butter, faithful team player to quick stir-fries, virtuous add-in to any number of cheesy pasta dishes. Broccoli is the vegetable we reach for when we need a little something extra to round out a meal. Here’s how to trim it down to bite-sized pieces, along with five ways to cook it up. Buying the Best BroccoliWhen buying broccoli, choose vegetables that have a uniform green color with no major brown or yellowing spots. The broccoli stem should feel firm and the crown should be tight and springy; soft stems or limp florets are a sign of old broccoli. Store broccoli in the crisper drawer in the fridge until you’re ready to use it. Broccoli should keep fairly well for at least a week. Broccoli can also be steamed, sautéed, and roasted. You could even throw long spears on the grill! broccoli Equipment

How long does it take broccoli to soften on the stove?Boil. Set a large, covered pot of water over high heat. When it reaches a boil, remove the lid and add a couple tablespoons of salt. Add the broccoli florets and stem coins, and cook until they reach desired tenderness, 3 to 5 minutes.
How long does broccoli take to cook from boiling?Once boiling, use a slotted spoon to carefully lower the broccoli into the water. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until tender – you should be able to poke the tip of a knife easily into the florets.
How do you steam broccoli on the stove top?Add the broccoli florets to a steamer basket, and place it in a saucepan filled with 1 inch of water. Bring the water to a boil, reduce the heat to a simmer, and cover the pan. Let steam for 5 minutes, or until the broccoli is crisp-tender and bright green. Season with salt, pepper, olive oil, and lemon juice to taste.
How do you know when broccoli is cooked? The broccoli is done when you can pierce it with a fork. As soon as it is pierce-able, remove from heat, place in serving dish. Note that green vegetables like broccoli will turn from vibrant green to drab olive green at about the 7 minute mark of cooking. So, watch the time, and don't let the broccoli overcook!
