How to install service valves for tankless water heater

1.0 out of 5 stars Dont bother! Get another brand!

Ordered these thinking everything was fine, but just now (3 months later) got around to opening the box and trying to install them. To my dismay they not only look used, but they are missing one of the end couplings that makes them impossible to install without having to purchase that part. So 80 bucks for a pair of valves that are used and missing parts. Awesome job Amazon/Watts. Great quality control there! Contacted Watts, havent heard a peep, and Amazon basically says your S.O.L. if its over 30 days. Ill sure be inspecting EVERYTHING thoroughly now from Amazon the moment I get it. Ridiculous!

While remodeling my basement I also changed most of my water pipes in the house. When my Navien CH-240 was installed, the plumber did not use a valve kit, so to remediate this I purchased this valve kit. I also purchased the  Noritz IK-WV-200-1-TH-LF 3/4-Inch Lead-Free Threaded Tankless Isolation Valve Kit with 500,000 BTU Pressure Relief , because it looked similar at a better price point. Well well, guess what? They are one and the same!!! The Noritz only changed the handles (to have their own logo on them), other than that this is identical to the Watts. What am I saying, this is the Watts with different handles. BUT, what even nicer, it comes with the pressure relief valve as well (a Watts as well)! If purchasing the Watts kit, you need the relief valve, so the price would be much higher! So if I were you, I would just get the Noritz since it is one and the same, and you get the pressure relief valve included for a much lower price!

As far as how it works, I installed the Noritz and it works great, with no leaks. Since they are identical I count as reviewing this one as well.

EDIT: When I purchased these they were both sold and fulfilled by Amazon. Noritz was about 80 bucks and Watts a little over 100 bucks.

This are some great valves, and made installing a tankless hot water heater in a tight space go smoothly. However, I am knocking one star because I did have to repeatedly tighten them, and I mean really tighten these things, at the union to keep them from dripping a small amount of water.

this particular item which was a suggested buy for the ECO11 tankless water heater, needs either a relief valve or plug to complete the install.
the same Watts valves with the pressure relief valve included can be found by adding -RV to the end of the Watts product number.

Well, well. Seems this valve kit put me through a good 3hrs of un-needed torture with trips to home depot and getting bigger wrenches to over tighten union joints that simply didn't have a 25 cent O'ring included with a $60 valve assembly.
I mean really if Watts had just the common courtesy to put in the instructions that a O'ring will be needed for the union whether they supply it or you have to buy it. They could have even said your package may or may not include a needed O'ring that is mandatory for the unit to have a "non-leaking" seal upon installation.
Watts seems to make it a challenge for you to be a customer.....not a good business model. This was written after the job was finally completed and after reading the few reviews that echoed this same theme.

Hi, I purchased a tankless electric water heater and this product was recommended. Because I knew nothing about how any of this stuff works I had a contractor come out here. He looked at these valves and said they were not a very good design but installed them anyways. The cold water one kept leaking albeit barely. He stopped by three different times and finally explained to me that because of the poor design in the thread being stripped I’ll have to purchase some new ones. The new ones had a much different design(picture attached) but soon as he hooked him up they didn’t leak. Do you know it’s been up and running for three months now I’m happy that I have electric tankless water heater I feel terrible contractor had to come out here three different times. I’m giving this to stars only because I am a person that doesn’t understand how these things work I just know it didn’t work.

Installed these today with no issues at all. They are well made and easy to work with.

I think it's important to mention that you need to use thread tape (or equivalent) on the pieces you connect to the valves. They are tapered fittings and therefore do not use o-rings to seal, they seal against the male threads, and those male threads need to have thread tape (teflon tape, pipe tape, etc) on them or you will not have a good seal. I think most of the negative reviews are from people who's biggest issue is user error.

Mine came with the pressure relief valve. Have read some reviews where people say they didn't get that part. Mine was shipped by Handyman Direct. Thank you Handyman Direct!

I got these as recommended to be able to flush out my tankless hot water heater. They were very easy to self install. There is a very small slow drip in the top joint that may have been overtightened. I ended up using the flush connectors for my clothes washing machine, instead of a separate set of connections. I am happy for the adaptation for the washing machine. The cost of these valves was easily offset by the savings of the extra outlet parts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazed at this!

Watts is a highly respected manufacturer of all sorts of plumbing related products as well as other lines. But this Valve Kit is a piece of junk!! I have a gas fitter, steamfitter and assorted others licenses and usually can handle most things thrown at me. But the design of this is basically fault - the o ring seal is to far recessed into its groove to allow the mating surface to properly seal. This was pointed out by others here yet Watts (and Amazon) continue to sell it. I imagine the odd one works - if the stars are aligned and the brass to brass surface meet perfectly. But other than that - try a different manufacturer in this case. I did try alternative ways to make a seal, including a light wrap of teflon around the entire o riing - but no use. Be warned - or later on thank goodness for Amazon's excellent return process.

3.0 out of 5 stars O-rings are garbage (Replace immediately). Otherwise it's good

I replaced the water heater with a new combi boiler. My previous Webstone valve kit wouldn't fit. Only this or similar (possibly rebranded) valve kit can fit. As many other mentioned the union is leaking on both hot and cold lines. It's obvious 1/16" thick o-ring is too thin for the groove. It cannot develop enough compression to hold the water pressure. I spent half day to tight, and re-tight several times. Save your time and don't take risk to damage the heater ports. Go to hardware store and buy two 1-1/4" OD, 1/8" thick O-rings. Apply reasonable torque and you should not have any leak.

1.0 out of 5 stars Missing part

The box was clearly opened before and the o-ring in the hot water is missing which causes an improper seal (which would lead to a leak). Unable to return and replace and had to purchase the replacement part myself.

Do I need service valves on my tankless water heater?

If you don't have isolation valves, you can't do the necessary yearly maintenance recommended by your manufacturer. Without that maintenance, your tankless water heater could: Lose efficiency. Stop producing hot water.

What valves are needed for a tankless water heater?

Pressure-relief valves are an essential component of tankless water heaters. The valves allow you to manually release air from the heating chamber when filling the chamber with water for the first time, or during periodic maintenance.

Where does a check valve go on a tankless water heater?

Modern tanks contain a check valve on the cold inlet side of the water heater to save energy. It prevents hot water from running up the cold inlet waterline when there is a drop in pressure on the cold side.
