Muellers baked mac and cheese recipe with cornstarch

I used this recipe for years from the back of the box. Then I lost the box and could not remember the ingredients or their amounts. Thank you a million times for posting this recipe. I love it. No other mac and cheese recipe can compare.

Muellers baked mac and cheese recipe with cornstarch

This is a great base for a mac & cheese, but which can be amped up with different additions per your tastes. A few things I like to do:
1) Add bacon or pancetta - rendering this down and using that fat instead of margerine in the white sauce.
2) Cook down some onions in the butter (or fat from 1 above) and allow that to cook into your white sauce.
3) Not enough umami? Try adding some thinly sliced shiitakes with the onions.
4) Gruyere rather than cheddar. Trust me.
5) You're going to think I'm nuts with this one, but if you want to kick the flavor up a notch, try adding 1/8 tsp curry powder and/or cayenne. The heat is nice and makes it feel like more of an adult dish.

Muellers baked mac and cheese recipe with cornstarch

By far one of the easiest Mac & Cheese recipes. I use mozzarella for 1/3 of the required cheese and the rest is Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese. Then before I place in the oven I cover with 1/3 Parmesan Cheese and 2/3 Panko bread crumbs mixture. An easy crowd pleaser!!!!!

Muellers baked mac and cheese recipe with cornstarch

My mom cut this recipe off of a Mueller's box many years ago. This has always been a family favorite and when I got married and moved away...I took her macaroni dish and a copy of the recipe. I use this exact recipe for my family and I hope when my children move away they have the same memories of the amazing macaroni and cheese that mom always made.

I've used this recipe for years, and per a family friend's tip, I use 1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese and 1 cup of shredded Velveeta Cheese. It really makes the cheese sauce creamy and smooth.

Muellers baked mac and cheese recipe with cornstarch

I made this last week. I found it really nice and tasty but a bit grainy. Not sure if this is the cornflour, as I have never made it this way before. The only thing I changed was the topping, I put breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese on the top. Will make to your directions again but will replace the cornflour with flour.

Very simple, completely delicious! The only thing I did differently was that I used Radiatori instead of Elbow Macaroni. Do add the mustard, it completes the flavor of this fantastic mac & cheese recipe! It doesn't need to be complicated to be yummy!!! Thanks Northern Cook!

Can I use cornstarch instead of flour for mac and cheese?

If choosing to use gluten free all purpose flour, simply substitute it for regular flour and mix it with melted butter. When using cornstarch instead of flour, it has to be mixed with cold milk first and then added to the pot to heat through. (1 tablespoon of cornstarch is enough for this recipe.)

What does putting an egg in mac and cheese do?

The egg will make the Mac and Cheese smoother and creamier. I have tried this recipe with and without adding the egg and it does affect the texture of the final recipe. In a medium bowl, beat one egg. Warm the egg by drizzling in, very slowly, 2-3 Tablespoons of the thickened milk mixture.

Why do you put mustard in mac and cheese?

While you don't get a strong mustardy taste, the acidity cuts the sometimes overwhelming creaminess of mac and cheese and rounds out its flavor. It also adds a slight tanginess that we're not mad about. And with that, everyone's favorite comfort food just got a whole lot more comforting.
