Put on your brightest red dress, tuck a flower into your hair and join hundreds of other revellers channelling their inner Cathy and dancing along to Kate Bush’s debut hit in the windy moors of Sydney Park.

We’re experiencing a global Kate Bush renaissance, thanks in part to the dramatic use of Running Up That Hill in Stranger Things. But there’s a loyal set of Bush buffs that has been keeping the British singer-songwriter’s music alive in a different way.

The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever originated in 2013, when UK-based theatre group Shambush gathered together 300 Kate Bush impersonators – dressed in her outfit from the Wuthering Heights music video – to dance, mime and frolic along to the 1978 single. It caught on, and similar events have been staged around the world, including in Sydney. Now it’s back.

Get out on the wily, windy moors of Sydney Park, don a red frock, pin a flower in your hair and start memorising all the moves. In the clip, Bush performs a twirling, leg-kicking dance (that’s part-mime, part-interpretative dance) while singing the song. Inspired by the classic novel by Emily Brontë, she serenades Heathcliff from the POV of Catherine Earnshaw: It’s me, Cathy / I’ve come home, I’m so cold / Let me in your windo-o-o-ow

There’s no need to register, just rock up and follow along (there’s even a tutorial for the dance online for those who want to get all the steps down pat).

Similar events are being held concurrently around the world. And there’s a reason organisers chose July 30: it’s Bush and Brontë’s shared birthday.

From 12pm.

Kate Bush fans in Sydney have had to wait two years since their last Wuthering Heights Day. Little did they know at the time, but the wait is going to be so totally worth it because, as you are probably aware, Kate Bush is seeing a bit (understatement) of a resurgence this year. 2022 just might be the Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever.

It all began with Shambush’s 300 Brighton, UK, Kates in 2013, when Kates dressed all in red (red dress, red stockings and black belt) descended on the field to dance to the 1978 Kate Bush classic. Sydney’s first edition happened in 2017 and the community event run by volunteers and without sponsorship has grown since then.

And while new Kate Bush fans have only just been introduced to the British singer thanks to Stranger Things (Season 4), there’s plenty of time to go from “Running Up That Hill” to learning the “Wuthering Heights” choreography in preparation for the big day, which just so happens to also be Kate Bush’s birthday—July 30.

To make sure you’re moving the right way, here’s a mirrored version of Wuthering Heights so you can practise at home. But, if you want to get some group practise in beforehand, take a peek at The Most Wuthering Heights Day Facebook page for some pre-Wuther parties.

There’s no need to register for The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever, but you can follow the event page to stay up to date with the latest developments and find out everything else you need to know.

British music icon Kate Bush is still riding high in the charts with “Running Up That Hill,” thanks to its inclusion in “Stranger Things.” But that’s not her only enduring hit.

Bush was the first female artist to achieve a number one single for a self-penned song in the UK back in 1978 with “Wuthering Heights” – a pop ode to Emily Bronte’s famous novel. The song is celebrated each year with “The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever,” when fans around the world gather to recreate the famous music video.

Atlanta’s 7th-annual celebration is Saturday, July 30, in Candler Park starting at 10 a.m. The event, organized by Bush fan Kim Manning, is also a fundraiser for the Atlanta Feminist Women’s Health Center. Get your red dress ready, learn the choreography, and celebrate Kate’s birthday.
