Retrieve Deleted Photos on an Android Smartphone

The easiest way to retrieve deleted photos on your Android smartphone is with an app called DiskDigger.

Don'tuse your phone for anything else until you've recovered your image. Creating new filesordata may erasethe deleted image that's likely still on your phone.

Using your phone, go to the Google Play Store and download the DiskDigger app.

  1. Once the DiskDigger app is downloaded to your Android device, open it. If it asks you to allow access to photos, media, and files, choose Allow.

  2. Within the app, select Start basic photo scan.

  3. When you see the deleted photo appear, tap the box in the upper-left corner to select it, then choose Recover at the top of the screen.

  4. The app asks how you would like to recover the files. Choose Save the files to an app on your device.

  5. The app presents options for where to save the photo. Choose the one that works best for you and follow instructions from there.

Retrieve Deleted Photos on Android Tablet

The process of retrieving deleted photos from an Android tablet is virtually the same as on an Android phone. Just be sure to read all the on-screen instructions within DiskDigger to catch minor differences.

Other Options to Restore Deleted Photos

There are also software programs to help you restore deleted photos, including Recuva, which hasn't been tested for this article but comes recommended by reliable sources. Download the program, then follow the instructions, which involve plugging your phone into your computer and using a tool to locate the deleted pictures.

You can search for similar programs online. Just be aware that some are paid and others are not.

Out of options for getting that image back from your phone or tablet? Think about places where copies of it could be:

  • Did you email or text it to a friend? Ask them to send it back.
  • Did you post it on social media? You can download it from there. For example, on Facebook, open the photo, right-click on it, and select Save image as.Then go through the normal process to save the file to your computer.
  • Did you back it up using Google Photos, Dropbox, Carbonite, or another backup storage service? These services have ways of restoring your documents. For example, the process in Google Photos is the same as the one for Facebook described above.

This guide will show you how to recover deleted photos on Android.

One of the easiest ways to restore deleted files is from the trash on your phone. Each Android phone is different, but this will give you an idea of how to recover deleted photos.

To recover deleted photos from the trash, do the following:

  1. Open the gallery or photos app, which is most likely Google Photos.
  2. Swipe up the Photos app to bring up a button for the Trash and tap it.

  3. You will see deleted photos provided they’ve been there for 30-60 days. Backed-up items will be permanently deleted after 60 days. Images that aren’t backed up will be deleted after 30 days.
  4. Select the photos you want to recover.

Recover a Photo with Undo

It’s important to note that you can undo the deletion of a photo, but you only have a couple of seconds to do it.

Note: The Undo button only appears for a few moments, so you’ll need to tap it quickly.

Recover Photos from Google Photos On the Web

Assuming your phone and pictures are backed up to Google Drive, your photos should be easily recoverable. Another way to get them is from your phone or computer browser.

To recover your pictures from Google Photos, do the following:

  1. Launch a browser on your computer, go to https://photos.google.com, and log in if you haven’t already.
  2. In Google Photos, you’ll find tons of photos you might have thought were deleted.

Recovering Deleted Photos

Modern Android phones come with a ton of storage, and if you save your photos to Google Drive (15 GB free storage), you should have plenty of space for them. However, it’s worth noting that if you have multiple Google accounts, check them for missing photos. You might have saved your photos to a different account.

If you keep them stored in the cloud like Google Drive, you can quickly recover them, even if you accidentally sent the photo to Trash. However, Google will automatically delete images in the trash after 60 days.

For redundancy, you might also consider using another cloud service like OneDrive for Android to back up photos. Or, if you’re an iPhone user, you can transfer photos from iCloud to Google Photos.
